I need some potty training support

My DD will be 3.5 next month and still refuses to go on the potty. I've attempted in the past and then always went back to pull ups because she will hold her pee all day and then have one big accident. I was scared she would get a uti from holding it in so long. She wakes up dry every single morning, tells us when she is peeing and pooping. I know she is capable of this but she is being so stubborn. I have a potty chart and she knows what her rewards will be but she doesn't seem to care. She "tries" to go on the potty but nothing comes out.

Do we keep trying or wait till she lets us know that she is ready? Today is the first day that we are trying again and she woke up at 7am and still has not peed yet and I know she has to go.

Re: I need some potty training support

I feel your pain. My 3 yr old DS is so stubborn. He has no problem sitting in a dirty pull up. Won't even tell me if he made.
With both boys in school and running around I haven't had a few days to really work on it. We are always in and out. At home with no pants on he will go on his froggy potty. At school he will not go in their bathrooms. The teachers take the class at least twice a day (its 3 hours he's there) and he won't go. He will poop their and not say anything. I put him in underwear at home and he will make in it.
Last week he was sick with the flu so potty training was out the window. This week I am really trying hard core, but it's tough bc I have bad cabin fever and just want to take them out, but I know it's a set back to put him in pull ups. Ugh!

My DD was the same way, refused to use the potty and would hold it in all day until I finally caved and gave her a diaper. I even called the doctor with concern of a uti.

I finally couldn't take it anymore and tried the 3 day method and literally got rid of all diapers and told her that was it. I told her the diaper fairy cam and took all of her diapers and had a laundry basket full of undies that I had been collecting in anticipation for potty training.

She was so excited to see the undies but was still reluctant to use the potty. The 3 day method tells you to make them drink ALOT of water, so at some points she couldn't even hold it. That's when you're supposed to catch them in the act and run the to the potty.

Luckily my DD just got it and never really had accidents except over night the first week.

What I thought also helped that a friend has a DD 3 months older than my DD and she had seen her trying to use the potty and wanted to do it also.

What I really think did it was getting rid of all diapers and following the 3 day method. It really worked for us. It seems like a lot to do but it's effective.

Good luck, it was the most stressful thing for us and it ended up being easier than I anticipated. They all get it at some point.

At 3.5 it's more of control thing than is she ready thing. My oldest is a chronic holder. There is a fantastic book called "it's no accident" that explains what happens when kids chronically hold in both urine and poop. Putting a child back into pull ups won't help. Not sure if she will attend prek at 4 but most schools wont change pulls ups at age 4. I would just switch to undies full time. Do a reward system for using the potty. We did one m&m for pee and 2 for poops. We also did sticker charts to earn a toy. Know that she will have accidents but if you follow her around and look for signs of holding you may be able to catch the accidents before they happen. Try to avoid any negativity surrounding the potty or her accidents.

Sounds just like dd. 3 day did not work for us. I'd love to hear other ideas too.

The thing is that she doesn't really have accidents. She will hold it all day long and go in her pull up as soon as we put it on for bed. Or she'll have one accident right before bed. Its crazy to me that she can hold it all day. She doesn't care about rewards either. I have a sticker chart, I've offered candy, ice cream, etc. makes no difference to her. She still hasn't peed yet and she was asking me for her pull ups. I think I just have to do all or nothing now. She's too smart for this lol.

Having the same problem with DS, and he's the same age as your DD (will be 3.5 next month). Definitely a control thing, because the last time I tried potty training he refused to go, the second I put him in a diaper he looked me right in the eye and went. My MIL found absorbent underwear, and I'm boot-camping it today. He's had one accident so far. Hopefully bribing with Kit Kats will work! My brother (his son is 7) gave me some potty DVDs so I may put those on.

If she is waking dry then she shouldn't even have the pull up on at night. With my DS is was all or nothing. A pull up even at night was just too confusing.

IMO throw away all types of diapers. Pull ups are just a diaper with a different name!

I need some potty training support

Take away something she loves - like a food. For my DS to poop train once and for all I had to take away the Ice Cream Man. He LOVES getting ice cream from the truck. I told him no more ice cream man until he goes poop on the potty 5 times. It took him 2 times seeing the truck go by and then that was it. He went poop 5 times and hasn't been an issue since. Taking away shows, toys, books did nothing for him.

I didnt read comments but I have boys they are 3yr 2 months. They are not trained but someone told me to start putting underwear on them & then diaper on top. They surely won't like sitting in wet underwear. I may try it.

I would just go straight to underwear. Keep putting her on the potty and even if she doesn't go just keep giving her positive reinforcement. Don't make a big deal if she doesn't. She will get it.

Re: I need some potty training support

I don't really have any advice as we are going through something similar. DS is 3.5 and we just did the 3 day method. We are on day 4 and he is still having several accidents a day. At this point we can't go back b/c he likes being in underwear, but he seems to be making little progress in recognizing when he needs to go.

One thing I will say is that we pushed him into the 3 day. It was all our idea. In hindsight I wish we had given him just a bit longer to figure it out on his own. So imo, don't feel pressured by outside sources to train if you feel she's not quite ready.
