I need ideas on what to do for my dh's 40th B-day....

I need ideas on what to do for my dh's 40th B-day....
we will have his daughter that wknd (Sat) 9/23 and she is 12 1/2 and so bad about "whats in it for me" (I know that is awful to say) that I cant even give him his b-day gift in front of her because she carries on that she didnt get anything.
He family really stinks and they dont celebrate b-days, and mine is going to be out of town so we are celebrating his b-day the following week.
So, he wants to go into NYC and go to a museum and out to dinner, I'm thinking of Belmont racetrack for the day and go to a nice italian restaurant for dinner.
Any suggestions would really be appreciated. I want to try and make the most of his b-day.

If he wants to go to the city, I would do that. Did he say which museum he wants to go to ? The Met, Museum of Natural History, Guggenheim, is Moma back in the city yet? They are all in great locations with lots of dining options.
