I need a Reddit eductaion
I would like to start looking at Reddit...but don't really UNDERSTAND Reddit.
What a sub reddit?
How does reddit even work?
Just looking for a (hopefully) simple explanation.

Re: I need a Reddit eductaion
It's very easy once you get used to the layout.
You can't "subscribe" to a subreddit until you have a username, so start with that.
There are I think 50 default subreddits that you will automatically be linked to, you can adjust that in your account settings.
To find what you like, you can start by going into "ALL" - it's a link at the top of the page. Look through the posts. If there is a subreddit name that catches your eye, check it out. It's very easy to subscribe and unsub all the time, so don't stress about that.
If you find something interesting on the internet, you can post it - either through a link, a pic you've uploaded to imgur or another photo sharing site, or just a text post.
HOWEVER each subreddit has rules so if you don't follow them your post can be deleted. Rules are listed on what's called the sidebar - it's just the right side of the screen.
The IDEA is to upvote valid content, and downvote invalid/unhelpful content. This isn't a website designed for "upvote if you agree, downvote if you disagree."
Those are the basics!
ETA: subreddits are just how reddit is divided. You want to be able to separate the cute animal pics (aww) from the gross and gory and NSFW posts (WTF)

Re: I need a Reddit eductaion
You can find a subreddit on just about everything. When you first go on reddit.com, you'll see the default subreddits. I think there are 50 now? You're going to want to create and account and change the homepage to just the ones you want to see. You can take away the ones you're not interested in (like "/r/news", which is just terrible). And add ones that you do want to see (like "/r/gameofthrones" if you're a fan, for example). It's called "subscribing" but really all that means is that it shows up when you go to reddit.com.
You might want to go to the search bar on the right and search for something like "best subreddits" - people make posts every week asking for suggestions and there are tons of threads that'll give you an idea for good ones to subscribe to. I get a kick out of /r/mildlyinteresting and /r/mildlyinfuriating, for example.

Re: I need a Reddit eductaion
I've also found that depending on the forum, some people are 1000x more crazy than anyone on LIF.
I'm also on a forum for my profession and I think a lot of people that post are not from this planet.
When I respond with honest, realistic stuff, it has been known to be downvoted, yet, people respond with nonsense it receives lots of upvotes.

Not for those who get offended easily though.

Re: I need a Reddit eductaion
P.S. I'm convinced someone who can't afford to buy a house on LI who was trolling here a few months ago started a thread on there the other day too. A lot of the same background info...only wanting expensive NS communities, etc.
