I lifted my toddler
I'm only 4 weeks, but this morning I lifted my 33lbs DS out of bed carried him down stairs and got him in the car..Afterwards as I was driving i started getting dull cramps....I've been panicking all morning..i'm not bleeding and the cramping is not severe at all...but i really hope i didn't do any damage... Has this happened to anyone else before..i'm freaking out..cramping has now subsided....but still i'm a nervous wreck.
DS is going to have to start getting up earlier so he can walk down the stairs himself!!!

Re: I lifted my toddler
I lifted a heavy box at work at about 5 weeks and felt some pulling/cramping afterwards (til the next day). I called my RE that morning and told her. She yelled at me for lifting, but told me its impossible to "lose" or "hurt" the baby from lifting something heavy. She did day that you can hurt yourself by lifting because your body is going through so many changes at that time.

Re: I lifted my toddler
My DS is 25 lbs and I lift him all the time. When we have a particularly active day I am very crampy so I try to take it easy afterwards. I spoke with my dr and he basically said that I have been lifting him all along so my body is used to it and it shouldn't have any negative effects on my pregnancy.

Re: I lifted my toddler
My DD is over 40 lbs and I pick her up more than I should. I'm sure you'll be fine , try not to stress about it. As long as you don't have severe cramps and bleeding I think dull pain here and there is very normal first few weeks. I also get that weird dull pain on and off very frequently, my OBGYN says it's normal firs few weeks.

Re: I lifted my toddler
I've picked up and carried DS my entire pregnancy. Doctor said it was fine and nothing to worry about.

Re: I lifted my toddler
thanks everyone! Your comments are definitely helping me to relax. If the dull cramps didn't occur right after lifting DS i would be less freaked out..i know some light cramping is normal in pregnancy.
Phew..thanks again!

Re: I lifted my toddler
I asked my doctor about lifting the kids. I have an almost 6 year old DD, and used to give her piggy bag rides and play with her in the backyard where I'd lift her up to the monkey bars, stuff like that. I also babysit full time for an almost 3 year old.
DD6 is 52 lbs, 3 yo is about 32 lbs.
My doctor said that with the 3 year old it is pretty much fine. That we can continue to do what we were doing before.
For the 6yo he said to be more careful. So there are limits to what I can do with her now but she understands.
I think you should be OK. I have some mild cramping here and there just on a regular basis and I think that's all pretty normal. Maybe you are just attributing it to the lifting, but...it isn't necessarily related.

Re: I lifted my toddler
I pick up my toddler all the time. Now that I'm full-term i try not too becasue between his weight, my weight and the baby weight it's a whole lot of weight.
At 4 weeks with this pregnancy we had the ice storm and i didn't know until the following week that I was pregnant. Well I salted and shovelled all the ice on my stairs walkway and driveway. I'm not saying that it was a good idea but it was a lot more strenuous than lifting my toddler.

Re: I lifted my toddler
This may sound super bad, but it's the honest truth.......I just felt like whatever happens happens. I know crapppy right, but I have a 21 month old DC that I HAVE to take care of. I can not and will not have a pregnancy that I have to tip toe around in. Does that make sense? Do I ride bulls, and move furniture, no....do I pick up and carry DD and continue with my daily life, yes. I do take it easier, and I do know my limits better, but I have never let this baby or this pregnancy STOP me from going about my daily life. My RA and my gall stones have stopped me plenty, and I already feel like a slum mom, so I have nothing left to cut out of my life. Being a good Mom is my job.
Having said that...you should be just fine. This early I would go more with implantation cramping more then anything, and through out most of my 1st trimester I cramped a lot for no good reason.

My DS is 40 lbs and I've lifted him my whole pregnancy as well. It's unavoidable so try not to worry. I'm sure you're fine!

Re: I lifted my toddler
I have to lift dogs everyday at work. My OB said it was more for our safety as our ligaments loosen etc. not because it is risky for the baby

Re: I lifted my toddler
You are fine and baby is fine. I have a 21 month old that I have been picking up since i got my bfp. I am now 18 weeks pregs and Dr said it is fine to continue carrying her. I dont do it for long periods of time, our bedrooms are on the second floor so i do have to carry her down a flight of stairs. You cant stop being a mom. Ita with what the previous poster said. Everything will be fine no worries momma

Re: I lifted my toddler
I was lifting my DD all of the time when I was pregnant with DS. She was at least 35 lbs. And I sometimes pick her up now at 42 lbs. And I'm always picking up DS at 27 lbs. I don't think that can really hurt the baby. You didn't do anything wrong.
