I know totally unrealistic, but do you wish
you were able to keep your baby/child away from it all?
I know I sound NUTS, but reading all this stuff in the news, i.e sexual assault at Oprah's school, kids getting beaten up, having things taken from them, kids falling into the wrong crowd, etc etc.
I swear I am petrified beyond belief. I sometimes wish I could shelter my baby from all this madness.
I used to always judge moms who were so overprotective of their kids, and now that I am a mom, I can totally see why, especially in the world we live in nowadays. I can totally understand why some parents would want to homeschool their kids.
Not to say I would do any of this, but as I get attached to this little guy more and more every day, I worry soooooooo much about what could happen to him
Am I making sense? Anyone else have similar thoughts?

Re: I know totally unrealistic, but do you wish
I'm afraid when my DD goes into the bigger school. She's already being exposed to way too much in my opinion and she's only in 3rd grade. I hear the stories about what goes on in the schools and i'm about ready to home teach.

I feel EXACTLY the same way you do. I could cry just thinking about it, but I know there is absolutely no way to shelter her from the world. I worry about the same things you do. It can almost sicken me.

Re: I know totally unrealistic, but do you wish
I want to put DS in a bubble up on a shelf. My whole outlook on life has changed now that I have DS. I hate hate reading the news headlines. DS came home yesterday with a huge bite mark on his back from daycare and I wanted to cry that he got hurt and bruised because was not able to be with him

Unfortunately, there's no place to escape to. Many of the worst things happen in small "safe" towns...

Re: I know totally unrealistic, but do you wish
I don't want to take my child away from it all, I want him to experience everything, good and bad. What kind of realistic life would anyone live if they didn't experience anything negative. I want him to have great times, but also some hard times. Thats life....you can't just hide people away (without being Joseph Fritzl)

I don't want to hide DC from normal stuff, but I would like to keep them away from the really sick stuff.....
I realize there will be bullies, disappointments, injuries, etc, and I have no problem with that. It's just the thinks that make your skin crawl when you read about them that I'd like to avoid....

Do what you will but here are your top 20 most dangerous cities in 2008. Note, that NYC ain't there. The closest you get to the metro area is Camden, NJ:
1. New Orleans, Louisiana 2. Camden, New Jersey 3. Detroit, Michigan 4. St. Louis, Missouri 5. Oakland, California 6. Flint, Michigan 7. Gary, Indiana 8. Birmingham, Alabama 9. Richmond, California 10. North Charleston, South Carolina 11. Cleveland, Ohio 12. Baltimore, Maryland 13. Miami Gardens, Florida 14. Memphis, Tennessee 15. Youngstown, Ohio 16. Atlanta, Georgia 17. Compton, California 18. Orlando, Florida 19. Little Rock, Arkansas 20. Minneapolis, Minnesota

Re: I know totally unrealistic, but do you wish
I think the thing to remember is that these things can be avoided by making smart choices, and using good judgement about people and situations. Think about how many of us grew up without any of these type of things happening...

You raise a good point, but I feel like things were simpler when we were growing up.
The world is crazier nowadays, there is ALOT out there to influence our children.
As I said, I am being unrealistic, it is just that I worry all the time what if I know I am insane.

What scares me the most is all the sexual talk, texting and actions that are going on between 12 yr old boys and girls.

Re: I know totally unrealistic, but do you wish
I totally know what you mean. I've been working in law enforcement for 12 years and let me tell you, I've seen a lot. People are friggin nuts out there! Not to mention the attitudes of the kids nowadays which contributes to the cycle of a more crazy/dangerous society. There is nothing more we can do than just raise the best humans we possible can. And always remember to lead by example. Teach your child to be very aware of his/her surroundings from early on.

Oh goodness, I do not even want to go there with sex and stuff. Kids nowadays are way too advanced.

My nephew is 14 and apparently forwarded a txt from some 13 yr old to my DH(his uncle) telling him to sneack out and #uck her!
