Anyone here TTC#2 while BFing #1? My DS just turned 1 and we are not ready to wean. We want to TTC #2 but my cycles have not returned. Just looking for any experiences or insight!

Thanks!

You may need to cut down some of the feedings so that your cycle will come back. My cycle returned on it's own while bf'ing when DS was 14-months. I've read that's a common time, although it can vary widely. I conceived while bf'ing.

I'm 11 weeks pg with #2 and still BF 15 mo old DD. AF returned just as DD turned 13 mo. I got pg the next cycle. It's hard to say when your AF will return and it's pretty uncommon (although not impossible) to get pg before your 1st pp AF. I think I read on average most women will get AF around 14 mo. DD had finally started waking less during the night at 12 mo and spaced out her day feedings more (I helped her a big with this, she's always been a big nurser and never turned it down if I offered).

I wouldn't wean if you're not ready.

Right now DS nurses in the morning when he wakes up and before he goes to sleep. He also nurses at least 1x during the night. And I pump once at work for him to have milk in a sippy cup. I am thinking of transitioning to organic milk, but I am worried also that if I stop pumping once a day, a might completely lose my supply...

I read a bit and I hear a lot of people talking about night weaning, but since I work, I feel like it might be better to day wean?

So possibly my AF will return soon! I felt crampy last week like it might, but no such luck. Do you still BF around the clock?

At 12-months you can start offering milk or some alternative and stop pumping. If you're only pumping once a day, weaning from the pump shouldn't be difficult. You're not nursing that much, so your cycle might come back on its own. At this point, your supply should be well established and will adjust to a new schedule (if you notice a drop - add the pump session again). I also work and weaned from the pump at 12-months. DS continued to nurse for sleep, throughout the night and in the AM.

Thanks so much! I am going to do this. It will be so nice to give up pumping! On the weekends, DS will nurse before a nap, but I am sure I could wean him from that since he doesnt nurse before a nap at daycare. I think its so funny that I am still worrying about my supply! I thought I would be over that by now. I guess I don't want to slight DS in the hopes of having #2. I am so thankful for you sharing your experience. I have gotten lots of eye rolls just knowing that DS is still nursing and he is a year old...

You can definitely still nurse for the weekend naps - we do! I was worried about my supply too and it was from other mommies that I heard you could wean from the pump and still keep nursing. I wanted to throw a party when I retired my pump - best day ever! Just an FYI, as a pregnant bf'ing mom - it's rough being pregnant and bf'ing, definitely possible, but challenging.

Great! This is sounding better and better. I did read that it is very challenging. It makes you even more tired because your body is providing for two babies at once! I admire you for doing it! You are a strong mama!

Just because you cut out sessions does not mean you will lose your supply at all. Just as an example, I BF DD before bed only from 15 months until she was 21 months. And there were definitely nights that I didn't (out to dinner, away, etc). I did go 2 nights without nursing her to sleep since DH and I were away and supply didn't go away - I also didn't pump during this time either. Your body adjusts and always knows how much milk you need. Hope that helps you a little.Chat Icon

Thank you so much for this. It definitely helps. I would think because we are so established that I wouldn't just lose my supply. I mean, there were some days I couldn't pump for the day at work and pumped at night instead and my supply didnt diminish. I guess, I would just feel guilty if it diminished now after all this time because I want another DC.

Re: I know this is the wrong board...but...BF & TTC??

I got pregnant with DS#2 when DS#1 was 10 months old. I nursed him all throughout my pregnancy and he just stopped nursing 2 months ago (he is 23 months) so for 2 months I was nursing both of them!! When DS#1 turned 1 we introduced almond milk so he had that and still nursed but only right when he woke up, before a nap and before bed. He drank 1-2 cups of almond milk throughout the day. My midwife was 100% okay with me nursing throughout my pregnancy and never told me to cut back and there were no issues. She just told me to make sure to keep up with my vitamins and to drink lots of water and to eat enough because I need the energy for myself, the baby and to nurse.

AF returned at 6 weeks for me so it was a little different for me, I didn't have to wait for that to start. I pumped for the first 2 months and I'm guessing that's why it returned so soon because the pump isn't as strong as actual nursing.

I am no help, but thanks for posting this. DD is 11 months, and I was wondering the same thing. We are hoping to conceive soon so that DD and #2 would be about 2 years (or a little less/more) apart, but DD still nurses alot. I am worried that it could be awhile before AF returns!

This is good to know! I know I read conflicting things about pregnancy and BFing. But, I did read, that if it is a healthy pregnancy, without any complications, there would be no reason to stop nursing. I also read that you will be really really tired if you don't keep up on vits, food and water! Thanks so much for sharing your experience!

Now DD BF's before bed, when she wakes in the AM and before her nap. She also still sometimes wakes at night and will nurse briefly once or twice. Around the time that I got AF back she was only sometimes STTN so she still would get up and nurse many nights. She also was still nursing after her nap on certain days.
