I just don't know!!!!!

Apparently my boss has been asking around about my plans for after the baby is born.

He has yet to ask me, I have no idea why, but in all honesty, DH and I haven't even had time to pick out names let alone discuss life after the baby is born.

We've never done this before, but I guess I need to tell him something.
I had told him early on that maybe he could hire someone temp with a possible perm status if I decide not to come back.
Is that unfair?

Re: I just don't know!!!!!

I'd tell him you not sure and thats it. Its up to him to decide if he wants to prepare for the worst (you not coming back) or hope that you come back (with out really knowing). He needs to decide what would be best for him and the company really.

Do you lose anything (any benefits, pay, etc) by telling him your not coming back?

I lose nothing because I am getting nothing. I receieve no maternity benefits here and my insurance is with DH.

ITA.

If I were you, I'd be afraid to tell him I wasn't sure because he sounds like the type to give your job away based on your uncertainty.

thats exactly how my situation was. I told my boss that I wasn't sure and he should prepare for the worst, me not coming back. But, I did ask him that if I called him in 6 months is there a possibility that I could come back? And he was like ABSOLUTELY. I was glad I was honest with him....and will be leaving on good terms

I think it's fair for him to ask in a way, so he can start to plan for your absence.

Honestly, I would not tell him you are unsure. I would tell him you will be out x amount of time, and if you change your mind, you can tell him then.

It sounds crappy, but our maternity leave system is crappy, and if you want to make sure you do have a job waiting, you need to protect yourself.

I think it's sneaky and unprofessional that he is asking around like that. I would tell him you are coming back, and if during leave you feel like your not, call him and tell him.

Oh I meant to say, most people really don't know how they will feel until the baby arrives. I had one friend who couldn't wait to go back to work, but wound up a SAHM after a few weeks away from her child. Another person I know thought she would want to stay home, but she did change her mind.

I think most employers assume you may not come back no matter what you say or how dedicated you were before your leave.

You're right, he is sneaky and I didn't appreciate him asking others.
