I feel like an awful mother...

I know I'm a new mom, but I'm so upset. I feel as if DS will never be comfortable eating now matter what. I can't stop crying myself because I return to work in just 2 weeks and how am I going to leave him when I can't have a day where all his feedings go smoothly. I switched formulas last week to Similac Sensitive and he's been so gassy the past 2 days! He cries when we feed him and it's obvious he needs to burp. DH thinks he is sucking too much air, but I don't know where to begin with changing the bottle. We are using the Born Free bottles now. I have been using Mylicon and it's not working, I don't know what to do next! Please let me know if you have any suggestions. We already tried the Good Start and he was having the same issue and it made his bowels green which freaked me out. With the Sensitive his feedings were much faster compared to the Nestle, but the past 2 days have been hard. He has been on the Similac for about 5 days and is 2 months old.

Re: I feel like an awful mother...

First of all, you are NOT a bad mommy!!! As a new parent myself, I am learning that everything is trial and error in the beginning until you really get to know your baby. My DS has been gassy on and off the past couple of days and I asked some friends and family if we should change our bottles as well (we are also using the born free). Many of them said that they changed their kids over to Dr. Browns and the baby was MUCH better with gas and most of them stopped spitting up all together. I'm gonna take a ride to BRU today and pick up a start pack of the Dr. Browns and see if that helps DS out.

Also, a friend of mine taught me a trick to burping that worked with all 3 of her kids. Instead of patting, try gently squeezing his back. Place your hand across his back and squeeze his back while moving your hand up and down his back from just above his butt up to his shoulder blades. My mom also suggested rubbing his back with some pressure rather than patting. I have been doing these since last night and he has been burping like a champ!

It will get better!!! Remember that babies can sense the way we (mommy and daddy) feel. So if you feel stressed and nervous when you hold him, he will feel that. Try to relax and he will fall into a schedule soon enough. Chat Icon

You aren't an awful mother. You have a gassy baby!

One thing that helped us was feeding Maddie in an upright position. As close to 90 degree angle as possible. That will help the gas escape. Burp often - use different methods...football hold, over the shoulder (be ready with a burpie and dont' do that before work:aah:)

It's normal to be insecure when you're new at this. It will get easier!

Are you using powder or RTF? Powder can be gassy.. b/c of the mixing your puttin in bubbles into it.

Thanks for the burping tip. Also, please let me know how the Dr. Browns work out. You would think that with the cost of the Born Free, that gas would not be an issue!!

Powder - it just works better for us since DS likes room temp anyway and it's more cost effective. I did read that powder can cause the gas though.

My husband learned his lesson the other day after DS spit up all over his shirt and he had to change for work Chat Icon

you are not a bad mom!! I've been using the playtex drop ins, have you tried that? my baby is also very gassy but I think it's because he slurps while he tries to gobble his formula.

someone suggested rubbing his back when burping, this is what I do and it works really well

My DD cannot tolerate the powder. I had to call the ped and didn't realize there could be such a difference but going back to RTF made the difference.

My son was obscenely gassy and he would scream and arch his back throughout his entire bottle. The only thing we could do was literally stop every ounce or so and lay him on his back and bend his legs so his knees were up against his chest - he would pass gas and feel better. Also, you can ask your doctor if perhaps putting a little cereal in his bottle would be OK - that really helped us for some reason.

When my DD was gassy I would lay her one my bed & raise her knees to her belly - slowly - and it would release the air bubbles. Good Luck - you're doing fine & she'll be fine!

Re: I feel like an awful mother...

Burp often. I also read somewhere to rub or apply pressure on the left side of their back (I forget the reason) and this seemed to help with my DS. He would eventually get the gas out, but was also a spitter upper. I found myself hoping for a spit up, because that meant he got the gas out. Chat Icon

We used Born Free bottles at first, but I eventually changed to the Playtex drop ins. I think they made DS less gassy.

It takes a while to figure things out. You're doing great Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA - I use RTF, not powder. DH thought he was gassier the few times I used powder, but I wasn't sure I noticed a big difference and I did pre-mix the powder in a pitcher.

U should try getting a pitcher like this one... External Image

I premade all of Kristina's milk so that way I had to just pour it out into a bottle. It made a world of difference b/c when you mix the powder in water then serve - you are giving them a TON of gassy bubbles in the mix...

Re: I feel like an awful mother...

Can you try switiching to the Dr.Browns bottles...?

How about changing formula to Similac Isomil (soy formula)?

These two things combined with burping every 2oz (and he had to be burped kinda sitting up, and I had to "rub" his back upwards)
seemed to do the trick for DS.

I still had to use mylicon time to time as well..

ETA- I also had to use RTF

I didn't get a chance to get to BRU today but I had 2 sample nursers and Playtex Drop-Ins that I got in the mail when I was pregnant. DS seems to be doing much better with the drop-ins even though he has only had a few bottles with it. I'm gonna stick to this bottle for the next few days and see how he does. If not, I will try the Dr. Browns.

I agree that the cose of the Born Free bottles the gas issue wouldn't be so bad. But, I guess every baby is different. Maybe some babies do well with the Born Free while others are gassy with the Drop-Ins and/or Dr. Browns.

You and I must be on the same schedule; we both recently switched formulas, both using Born Free. Yesterday I did the same exact thing w/ the Playtex! How funny, I had a sample w/ 5 liners so I tried a bottle. He still fussed, but not sure if that was because he was still gassy from the last feeding. I gave up but wonder if I should give it another shot. His overnight feeding, he was fine w/ the born free....so who knows, maybe he is adjusting to the formula still, it's only been 6 days. It's a formula specially made for gas, go figure!!

Re: I feel like an awful mother...

Landon gets really gassy when I mix the formula right before he eats. I usually pre-mix enough each morning to last for the day. I have to warm it up, but there are virtually no bubbles.

Re: I feel like an awful mother...

Alex does very well with the Dr. Browns. We tried avent, playtex drop ins, born free and dr. browns is the only one that works great for him.

We use the RTF formula. He is taking between 4 - 5 ounces and we burp him every 1 - 2 ounces He gets a little gassy but with a little Mylicon he has no problems.

I just bought the pitcher that Kristinasmama mentioned above, so maybe that will help. I hate having to warm up bottles, it's such a pain, especially when DS is screaming for his food!! I will accept any and all tips for warming up the bottle (although I am freaked by the thought of using the microwave).

Thanks Julz! I saw this today and was tempted to buy it, but passed. How long does it take to warm up and do you have to worry that it's too hot?
