I feel like a horrible mommy

Rocco tested postivie to heartworm and its starting treatment on Monday. I havent stop crying since they told me 2 hrs ago.. I feel devastated and to top it when a family member call me and I explain them what is going on, she just said "oh its ok, he is just a Dog things happen"

I dont know how we are going to afford this but It is not an option not to do it.

Re: I feel like a horrible mommy

Don't worry....you are doing what you need to do for him now and that is what is important.

I totally understand peoples stupid comments. They just don't get it. Our dog has been sick for awhile now and his vet bills are adding up quickly and some people don't understand why we keep bringing him back to explore more treatments/medications ect.....since it is so expensive. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT US TO MAKE HIM SUFFER!!! People are just dumb!!!

Hope your baby gets better soon!

The "just a dog" comment makes my blood boil. Especially when people aren't talking about their own dog. Chat Icon

First off, you've only had Rocco for a year and he must have been tested when you went for your first vet visit, right? So this infection is less than a year old. Did the vet tell you what Stage of heartworm it is, or it's severity? It could be REALLY easily treated. I found out a lot about it Googling recently because the dog we're adopting was HW+ also. She is negative now.

It's not necessarily a death sentence, especially if he's had it less than a year. But you will have to be diligent about keeping him as subdued as possible during treatment. Make sure you ask your vet about that, and if you don't have a crate already, get one now. It will keep him safe and contained to prevent further complications. And you must be diligent about his heartworm preventative, every month, for the rest of his life.

A friend told me that after their shots are done and they are recovering, you could mix in a high protein food like EVO in with their regular food to help them build up their heart muscle.

Thanks, yes he was tested 1yr ago and he was negative. This was his 1yr re test. They dont know what is the stage, they would know on Monday when I take him to start the process. I am going to get him a crate tomorrow. This is the most heart breaking part for me, that now he have to be on crate when he is not use to...
Any tips of how to handle this painfull process?
