I don't get this.. (tax related)
Our families are OOS and our parents and a couple other relatives told us their taxes went down the past two years because of the market. They didn't have to grieve them, they just got the tax bill and it was lower for the second year in a row.
Why don't automatically decrease taxes here? Can someone explain?
Are the tax receivers in bed with all the tax grievance companies?

Welcome to NY!  I have no explaination. But at least we can grieve our taxes. I think it should be automatic though.

B/c in a financial downturn, other states stop spending. NY spends more 
I doubt this is the real technical reason. Aren't taxes based on the value of propety? Perhaps that's why??

My taxes went down the past two years also and I live on LI. I don't think you can compare - I highly doubt taxes going down across the board everywhere but here because of the financial downturn is the norm.

Even thought the market is going down the towns still need to collect the same amount of tax money so as values decrease your assessed value might decrease but they increase the tax rate so taxes end up being the same or more

yeah, on LI the value of your home goes down, yet your taxes keep going up!
