I cannot believe my father just said this!!

What is wrong with this man?

I told him our first choice for a girl's name is Emma (our last name starts with a P and is two syllables)

Does this sound stupid for any reason or not go together? He told me I have to choose a name that won't get her made fun of!! Then started rattling off her name with our last name!! I told him "I cannot change our last name". He said he wasn't a fan.

You choose the name you like. I told family over the weekend that we like the name Sydney and I heard a lot of "but that's a man's name". I got defensive. I had them trying to come up with better names...they couldn't. Don't let your father get to you.

This is the reason I am not telling anyone not even close family or the grandparents. I know they are going to think the names we picked out are weird. But as long as DH and I like it then I really dont care what anyone thinks.

Well, I do not know your last name BUT from experience with a horribly horrible maiden name...keep the first name something nice. I think Emma fits that bill.

I do know a couple who named their daughter Kallie Claire Lastname. One day it occurred to me her name is pronounced: Kal Eclair. I swear it made me laugh the whole day and still makes me chuckle when I think of it. Thank goodness it's her middle name and most people won't know it or be able to notice it/make fun of it.

eta---we also have kept our names secret as very early on i was getting tips, suggestions and requests [yes requests!!!] from everyone on what to name the baby!

We got alot of grief from people too. I told everyone that unless they cut it out they wouldnt find out until the baby was born. We had a list and we ended up going with our #2 pick anyway and everyone was in an uproar for nothing. Pick what you want, its your baby. Dont be upset, no one will care what you picked once you have the baby. They will all be oooh-ing and aaahhh-ing over the baby anyway....

Don't worry about it! My dad told me he didn't like Jack either - and that's what we plan on using. This coming from a man who wants our sons nikcname to be "Little Cheech" after him what his buddies call him. LOL. I think he was only partly kidding around.

Emma is a beautiful name and dad's are sometimes crazy!!!

Thanks everyone. I knew I should have kept the names a secret but I was excited. Now I am afraid it sounds funny with our last name and I'm second guessing myself....

I told my co-workers and boss the name we picked.

The boss did not like.

Hey woman... I can't help it if the guy with the same name dumped you years ago.

My uncle did this to my cousin when her daughter was born. He made her so upset with the name she chose that she ended up going with a different name and not the one she had her heart set on naming her little girl I always felt so bad for her for him doing that to her.
While I have no idea what your last name is, I think Emma is a beautiful choice. If it is the name you truly love, please don't let anyone make you rethink it

don't let your dad get your goat even if he was being stupid. next time.. before you have your baby, don't feel compelled to tell your fam member or friend your chosen name. people can be VERy annoying. to be honest, i told a few ppl up until my hub asked me not to anymore. he was afraid of the exact same thing.

these people have to understand that you're the one who's giving birth. and that it should only be your's and your husband's liking. people will always give their 2cents. try to block em out.

to put my 1-2 cents.. i think EMMA's a very pretty name.

Once again - I have to say this is why we have told no one the names we chose - they will find out after the baby is born and the name has been used - plain and simple - why go thru this and have anyone make you doubt the name you chose?

This is exactly why I don't believe in sharing a lot. I don't want other peoples opinions. They are going to think whatever they want and that's fine I just don 't want to hear it.

PS. I love the name Emma. You should still pick the name that YOU want.

Don't feel bad. Everyone has an pinion on the names we have picked. At the end of the day only you and DH need to like it.

The name is beautiful, it's a very classic & simple name that I feel sounds beautiful with ANY last name!!! Don't let them pressure you into changing your mind if it's what you love!!! Come up with some crazy name and tell him it's either Emma or the crazy name, see what he thinks!!

its too late not to tell but don't listen. Emma is a beautiful name!!! we've been getting asked too and MIL of course had a bunch of suggestions for boys names - i nipped that in the bud and just said if its a boy it will be named after DH and the middle name will be my father's. (DH and his dad have he same name). my dad's name is uncommon and i'm sure many don't like it. My father doesn't love his name but he's special to me and its not like you use your middle name regularly.

When I told my mom that DH and I chose the name Taylor, I got a less than great reaction from her....."um, I don't like it" to be exact!
I told her that was the name we chose and she will just have to get used to it.
Of course, I hung up with her and began crying hysterically.
Now she loves it.....dont stress over it

try not to let it get to you. I told my dad I liked the name Dylan for a boy, he said "Lets hope its a girl!!!!!"
I was so offended. I am no longer sharing my name choices with family!

Unless you last name is Pemma or something else that rhymes with Emma I wouldn't even think twice about it. Stick with the name you love, it's no one else's business.

It's reasons like this we've chosen to keep our name choices secret until the baby arrives (although I may tell you guys once we find out the gender.)
