I am heated right now! How would you handle this?
DHs uncle is putting in our central air. He gave us a quote of $6,000 before he started and we gave him half up front. He has come and gone at his leisure and spends more time bs-ing then working most times. The work has been an ongoing process for 2 months now. The only left to do is have the electrician come in and do his thing. Well the uncle tells us today ghat it's going to be another $1100 on top of the $6,000. I friggen lost it. I told him that when he gave us a quote, that should have included all of the work and he never told us there would be an additional expense for the electrician. That's just insane. We did our basement last year abd they needed to bring in an electrician and a plumber. That was included in the cost. I'm just really pizzed and feel like he's trying to take advantage of us. What would you do? I don't want to cause a family problem, bit this is ridiculous. How do you throw another $1100 bill our way?!?!

This is why doing business with family is tough. What does your DH say?

He wasn't even home, he's golfing do we will talk more about it at dinner. I did talk to my FIL and he thought it was crazy that he was asking us for that money and that I was well within my right to say something to the uncle.

Hmmm. Well, when a family transaction went sour I'd have to say we are on less then friendly speaking terms... hoping to get through it but it was my family not DHs.
Family and business do not mix. But I'd ask him to take money off the top because he wasn't exactly focused on the job... or offer to hire your own electrician...
You may want to ask one or two electricians for a quote and compare to his price.

Working with family is always tough. But I will say that when we got our CAC quotes, none included the electrician. We had to hire and pay our own electrician, it was about $1200.
editted for spelling, editted again to say we paid so much bc we had to upgrade (add amps), but I did know that regardless an electrician had to come it to hook up the cac.

My electrician is charging me $575 for my CAC hookups. Work his price down.

But you were made aware of that from the beginning. We were never told that the electrician would be an additional expense, we had no clue.

Yeah, that was a huge mistake on your DH's uncle's part. He should have made everything clear. Working with family/friends can be the worst, it always gets tricky. Sorry you are faced with an extra bill. I would probably just pay the electrician separately while making it clear that you are disappointed with how the entire installation went (you mentioned you were unhappy about other things too). And never recommend the person.

My husband is an electrician. If you want an estimate he can give you one.
