I almost cried checking out a daycare...
So today I had an appt at a daycare for a tour, pricing, etc. Another couple comes in with twins about 4 months old or so... the mom looked so sad and when she had to grab or sign something another teacher offered to hold the baby so when the baby started to cry the mom started to cry. She told me she's going back to work Monday and just came to drop off the check. I almost was in tears watching this whole thing b/c I know I'm going to be the same way.
Pregancy hormones doesn't help either.

Off topic, but how soon do I have to start looking at daycare? I would probably be going back to work mid August.

been there, done that with my son. it's still not easy to leave him, a year later, but it DID get much easier once i saw 1) how much LOVE he gets from his teachers there - they truly dote on him!; and 2) how much he enjoys being there, with all the fun stuff to do. sometimes i go pick him up and, even though he's thrilled to see me, he wants us both to stay there! i also truly believe that he has benefited from the socialization - he is wonderful with people and with other kids.
i'm sure you will have a similar experience. it just takes some time.

NOW - I secured a spot for my son (due April) for OCTOBER !! And they said Sept was close to full already -
The infant rooms fill up quickly b/c they are only allowed a certain # of babies per state law -

I'm due in May and looking to go back to work in Sept so I'm looking NOW. There's a waiting list at one of the places I looked and other places were starting to fill up for Sept. The sooner the better. I got a list of daycares in the area where I work and been calling and doing research since. Every place I've seen or called has been wonderful and accomodating. Just narrowing it down by price, location and of course how I felt about the place and people there.
As you heard... infant rooms get filled up fast b/c there's one crib per child and 1 teacher for every four babies.

i don't live in new york, but i imagine it's the same as north carolina, or maybe even worse. you really can't start soon enough, so that you have some good options when the time comes. i would go check out some places and get on some waiting lists NOW!!

the better the daycare, the longer the waitlist.
the daycare we want to put our child in has a 1 year waitlist.

It's going to be OK! I felt so down after visiting the one we ended up using. After Day 1, I was so happy with our choice. DS loves it, loves his teacher and has blossomed there. Socially it will be so good for you DC.
I promise, once you find the right place you will feel fine with your decision

When DH and I went on Monday to check out a daycare, I felt 100% comfortable - I'm SURE my tune will change when I'm actually dropping off MY own kid - but these kids all looked so happy and they were all running around and playing and getting along ........I'm sure they all have their bad days, but over all........even the little babies were all laughing and having a grand old time .........

I agree. The daycare we decided on has a wonderful staff. I don't think I'd feel bad at all because I trust the daycare 110%.
However, I checked out a few other daycares and the first one I visited broke my heart. I remember feeling guilty way in advance because I felt sorry for our unborn baby being left at the dingy daycare. I was going to go the grandparent/nanny route until I visited the daycare I fell in love with.

thats so sad to hear...This country should really have better maternity leave laws.....some people havea whole year PAID in other countries....
NJ just passed a law that FMLA will be paid starting July 1st. I applaued Gov. Corzine for such a progressive law. It's def. a step in the right direction!

Honestly after a while it gets so much better, my son has been at the same nursery for 2 years and its definitely his home away from home, and he loves it! He would rather be at school with his carer Mel some weekends, and he has lots of little friends. Honestly, just find a daycare with happy children!!! Thats the most important thing!

I know.... I live and work in NJ and this actually goes into effect THE DAY I return to work from Maternity Leave!
Actually, it's not really a law, I have to go back and read what my company sent out, but I believe it's something that you pay into (like STD), and I don't believe every company has to comply with it.
