Hypoallergenic forumlas

The Ped wants us to try 5 days of nutramigen b/c she thinks Ellie has an allergy though no severe symptoms like blood in stools or anything like that just a ton of crying all of a sudden. Anyway, I saw some others are using neocate and was just wondering if it's basically the same thing or is there some major difference. Seems like alimentum and nutramigen are the same just different brands. TIA!

Re: Hypoallergenic forumlas

Neocate is an amino acid based formula that is prescribed by your doctor. It is EXTREMELY expensive, so I'd try Alimentum and Nutramigen before going to the Neocate. Alimentum is still milk-based, however, it's predigested so they consider it hypo-allergenic. Ava was allergic to the Alimentum, as well.
As far as the Nutramigen goes, I believe it has a base of corn starch? I can't remember.

DD is on Nutramigen. It is cornstarch based - It is for babies with a milk protein allergy.

We use Neocate. Neither Alimentum nor Nutramigen worked for us. It is very expensive but my insurance covers it! They even deliver it to my doorChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Hypoallergenic forumlas

for those that have insurance paying for it, how did you get that? Was it a total battle to get them to cover the formula? Or did your ped just need to write a letter to your insurance?

It depends on your insurance. We're still battling them.

I can see it being a total nightmare - they would want to fight that tooth and nail I would think.

I will probably have to do this with baby #2 since my daughter has severe food allergies. Her allergist is recommending Alimentum. Damn that gets expensiveChat Icon

We didn't have to fight at all. I spoke to the insurance co and they spoke to the dr's office and that was it! As a matter of fact the insurance co has someone who is just in charge of infant formula!!!!!! If you need help FM me!

We had to switch Andy to Alimentum today due to severe infected exema and blood in his stool. Chat Icon

A friend of a friend has her insurance covering the Alimentum so I'm going to look into that next week.
