how to prevent tearing?
Any ideas on how to prevent tearing during childbirth? My friend is a doctor and said when he was a resident he actually massaged women's areas to prevent tearing. He was proud of himself because apparently it worked. Just wondering if there is anything we can do at home prior to giving birth.

Re: how to prevent tearing?
you (or DH) can massage the perinium at home with KY or other safe lubricants. I don't know of anything else to try.

I agree with the PP, also warm compresses on the area during birth help. :)

Perineal massage and squatting to help stretch the area. Start both weeks ahead of your due date!

Re: how to prevent tearing?
I had a wonderful nurse massage like crazy the entire 4 hours I was pushing (God bless her!) but I still wound up with a 3rd degree tear. DD wound up being a vaccum birth so I don't know if anything would have prevented the tearing. Praying that doesn't happen again. It was my biggest fear and it was awful.

I didn't do anything but my OB massaged before pushing. I also had a vacuum delivery but I had an episiotomy.

Re: how to prevent tearing?
I'm sure certain things may help, but i think its just one of those things that happens or doesn't. I have a very tiny tear (2 stitches) and my friend had the worst you can have..(over 200 stitches, not to scare anyone!!). I think that was mainly due to her screaming that she did NOT want a c section even after doctors told her that the baby was sunny side up and the width of the shoulders could cause damage. Why they didn't demand that she have one, i dont know but it took her months to heal. Second time around, she delivered her son just fine, minimal tear!

Wow! That's scary! I had my 9 pounder sunny side up but not too many stitches. Healed fast, but hope next time is less. Good to hear minimal tearing second time at least
