how to plan a long road trip??

does anyone do this and have pointers?

DH and I have done numerous road trips upstate (8+ hours of driving) as well as a 14-hour trip to NC.

For the NC trip, I went through AAA and had them send us maps of each state we were going through. Once we had a decent idea how we wanted to go, we played around with routes using bing maps to plan our route, see how long it would take us and see where there are tolls, etc. Once we had an idea of what we wanted, we contacted AAA again for their triptiks. They mapped out the exact driving map we wanted and their maps detail where there is ongoing construction and where their might be delays. It also showed us where exits were that had food and bathrooms for us to use along the way.

We have travelled upstate so often, we know the back roads like the back of our hand, so we know how to get around hot spots of construction and traffic.
