How to make a puppy cake?

Anyone have any thoughts? DD's birthday party is Sunday and we are doing a puppy theme. I would love to surprise her with a puppy cake but I have no clue as to how to make one. Simple ideas are better because while I am a good baker, I am not very artistic. Her favorite dog is a dalmation but it can be any dog.

Simple... the first thing that popped in my mind is an altered version of the bunny cake I've made....

Make two round cakes. One full round becomes the face (you can slice it in half and add filling for a layer cake). The other round, cut two curves on each side, making two "bunny" ears and the middle becomes a bow tie.

For a puppy, you can place the ears hanging down instead of on top for the bunny ears. The "bow tie" part, you can alter to be a red collar or a dog bone??? Or cut a snout shape to add to the face.

I coat the bunny cake with coconut which you can color brown for a puppy or leave it white and add black spots for a dalmation.

Hope this helps! Good luck and post pics of what you come up with!!!

These are good ideas. I think I'm going to be making cakes every night this week in order to try out different ones and see what I can pull off for the party.

Where are you located? I have a cake pan I bought for DD's b-day party in June...it's an old Wilton pan I bought off of Ebay.

Here's the cake I made from the pan:

It was easy to make, we just followed the color picture insert that came with it, using different tips. It was easy, but took a little time & patience.

You're more than welcome to borrow the pan if you'd like...I'm in Suffolk. Just let me know.

ETA: You could certainly decorate it as a dalmation instead of the coloring I did.

Re: How to make a puppy cake?

I did a trial run tonight of the 2nd dalmation picture. It came out so cute. Needs a little improvement but I think I can pull it off for a bunch of 5 year olds.

Thanks everyone for the tips.
