How old was your child when they learned...

... Their shapes and colors?

Lance's teacher told me she thinks he knows his shapes and colors this morning. I was wondering if that was "typical" for his age. He is 21 months. Chat Icon

Andrew knows his colors and learned them about 2 months ago or so.

Shapes, he only knows a circle and a triangle and he is 26 months old.

Colors - I think Ali was about that age when she learned them.

Shapes- she is still working on them, but I only just started with them recently. She knows a few of them, others seem harder for her

She is 27 months

Matthew started learning colors right after he turned 2 but he can't pronounce them all correctly yet. Like he says Yellow as "Whoa whoa".. The ones he recognizes and says on his own are:
red
green
blue
yellow
purple
black
Orange (only sometimes cuz he has a little trouble pronouncing it)

But there are other colors that he'll repeat back to me if I say them with him like Brown, white, pink, grey, orange and a few others.

As for shapes he's pretty good with them because he plays with shape sorters a lot and I've always repeated them. These are the shapes he can say:
Circle
Square
Diamond
Oval
Heart (Love how he says it, sounds like the boston accent...LOL)
Star
These are ones he tries to say and can't but he can recognize them when you ask him to pick up that shape:
Triangle
Rectangle

Are you wondering if he is behind?

There is so much to learn at this stage all kids learn so differently and may know one thing really well and another thing not at all.

Well he has a speech/ language delay, so it is hard to tell for sure what he knows. But, he seems to be able to always *pick/grab* the correct shape/color/animal.

So I was just asking because I am always trying to figure out what is delayed/typical etc...

Gotchya. IMO and this is just the feeling I get from reading these boards - kids who know their ABCs, Numbers, Shapes and Colors before 2 are ahead of the curve, or right on. It seems a lot know most of these things, but then again, for example, my one DD is really great with numbers, the other one really great with shapes, etc. And it's that way with a lot of things.

I think that's really great at 21 months that he knows shapes and colors. Chat Icon
