How old for....

S skateboard?

MP4 player?

IPOD?

YES I AM THINKING ABOUT THE HOLIDAYS AND I CAN NOT BELIEVE SOME OF THE STUFF MY 6 YR OLD WANTS

Are these typical requests at this age for a lower mid class neighborhood? He says his friends are all wanting them and they thought he was babyish for wanting the marshmallow shooter from the boycouts!

Re: How old for....

DS is 3

-getting a skateboard this christmas
-he has an iPod iTouch for almost a year already
-we use the iPod to hold all his music/videos so there was no need to get an MP4 player

i would say the requests are definitely age appropriate.

Re: How old for....

i would also agree the requests are definitely age appropriate because:

my neighbors son is 6 & has a skate board for about a year &
my cousin is 5 & has a ipod.

Re: How old for....

My kids are 5 and 6 and have skateboards already.

They haven't shown an interest in MP4s or iPods, but I'd probably say no to those. In their specific case they are hard on and lose things very easily and I don't think they are ready for fragile electronics.

Although they DO take very good care of their DSis...

Thank God I'm not alone! I was starting to think I was the meanest Mom on earth for not giving my kids an iPod Touch yet. I am considering it for Christmas for my 9 year old.

Re: How old for....

My DD asked for an Ipod last Xmas (she was 5 1/2). I got her an inexpensive MP3 player with a mini speaker and she was happy as a clam. She just knew Ipod bc DH and I have them, she just wanted music. Skateboards sound fine for that age too. I would only buy him what I thought he really wanted and would take care of. And could operate. IMO age doesn't always dictate responsibility but with my DD, I was not buying her a $150 Ipod. I didn't want to get her a shuffle bc I felt she needed the display and then I spent a total of $20 or 25 including the speaker and she loves it.

Also, same DD was squealing about American Girl dolls just a week or 2 ago. Her friend had the one that you can get made to look like your DD. She is not a doll kid and hardly ever played with the $15 doll she has. So no way would I ever consider an AG doll for her.

FTR, my DS is 8 and likes a marshmallow shooter.

Someone bought one for my HUSBAND last year. That same somebody bought one for himself and - of course - they had a marshmallow war in my backyard during the summer. Fun at the time.. but they start to mush and melt and get stuck as your running around. And if it's dark it's hard to find them all when your wife makes you go outside to pick them all up before bed..Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon And.. racoons love marshmallows. And I don't love racoons.

Re: How old for....

Personally, I think 6 is too young for any of those things. I definitely wouldn't buy those for my boys right now. My oldest is 6.5 and youngest is 4. I'm still trying to get my older son to ride a 2 wheeler. No way he's getting on a skateboard. And an Ipod and an MP4 player is NOT for a young child. I wouldn't spend that kind of money on something like that. I don't want my kids with headphones in their ears all the time. Way too young IMO! Maybe when they're 10 for the music stuff. Not sure about a skateboard. It really depends on the child. Mine is not ready for it, not until he's older for sure. I personally don't buy things just because everyone else has it. No, I don't want him feeling left out, but an Ipod is ridiculous. Both of my boys want the marshmellow shooter! Chat Icon

ITA. DS is 5 and things like Ipods and MP4 players are NOT in the picture. I don't care if it's trendy to get them. There's no need. Hell, I didn't even get an Ipod until I was 25 Chat Icon

Re: How old for....

My oldest got an ipod for christmas last year (when she was almost 9), my 2 youngest have cheap MP3 players which they call ipods and are happy with them.

But of course they fight over my itouch for the games, I might upgrade mine to a larger one so they might have to share my old one.

My 4 yr old got a skateboard last year for his birthday but it was a kid size.

Thanks for everybody's view. I think we will hold off a bit on the ipod/mp4.

He may get a skate board.

Re: How old for....

I wouldn't buy any of those things for a child that age, but that's just me.

SD will not be getting an iPod or anything like that anytime soon...she will be 8 in December. Then again, she does not treat her belongings very well so that has to be taken into account. Last year for her birthday we got her a Hello Kitty CD player and some CDs...she has been perfectly happy with that Chat Icon
