How often do you get your carpets cleaned?

Please help settle a debate between DH & I. Do you ever get your carpets cleaned? If so, how often? also, do you clean them yourselves or get them done professionally?

I live in an apartment and we borrow our parents cleaner after large events or min. 2x a year for really high traffic areas and once a year for the less used carpets.

I have a steam cleaner so I clean them often. My family room carpet where my kids play and is a high traffic area gets cleaned probably every 2 months. My DS is always spilling something so it needs it. The carpets upstairs in our bedrooms get cleaned a few times a year. I discovered that using vinegar instead of the cleaning solution works great and it's health and environmentally friendly.

we would have a professional come about every 6 months when we had carpet in our apartment.....

I do our bedrooms once a yr because we don't eat or have our shoes on up there.

Our Oriental Rugs I do every 6 months. And the same with the basement.

I bought my own because it is way cheaper and super easy.
