Instead of feeling like I need new pillows and going out to buy them.... I tend to see them in the store and realize I could use new pillows 
A little backwards, but works
ETA: I would say every 2 years or so

im assuming you mean bed pillows not couch pillows?
bed pillows.. i can't remember the last time i bought a new one - has to be many years. mine is covered with a pillow cover and then the pillowcase, so it doesn't get dirty.
I would think about changing it out if it lost its fluff or i wasn't comfortable on it, otherwise i don't see any reason to
couch pillows - whenever i feel like changing things up more often than i should probably!

We've had ours for 1 year. I have to buy a new one, I hate it, DH likes it.
I spent like $100 (GC to BBB) on EACH pillow - and it SUCKS.

probably once per year...
ETA: I buy pretty cheap pillows
I saw on dr. Oz or one of those that if you fold your pillow in half and it stays that way you are in need of a new pillow, if you fold it in half and it goes back to how it was you are good...
