How much to feed 1 month old son?

We just upped his formula to 6oz since he still seemed STARVING after he ate just 4 oz. He was eating every 2 1/2 to 4 hours (the longer spans overnight), but by 2 1/2, he was downright RAVENOUS for food.

Now he eats between 4 and 6 oz per feeding. I was hoping he wouldn't get so hungry so soon, but he STILL cries/screams to eat sometimes just 2 hours after his last feeding.

a) Is this normal?
b) Do I just feed him when he gets frantic to eat - even if it's early?

I want to do the right thing... meaning, I want to satisfy him when he wants to eat, but I don't want him to gain TOO much weight!

Our last appt was 2 weeks ago, and at 3 weeks old, he was just about 11 pounds. He's probably between 12 and 13 now, at 5 weeks.

Thanks!

up until 3 months, just feed and feed, and keep a log of feedings, diaper changes, sleepiness, playfulness etc

around 3 months you might see a pattern, you can instill a schedule then, before that I think most babies aren't very predictable..

you shouldn't be worried about an infants weight until they start solids, that's when their meals can become unbalanced and they can overeat. But formula/bm is perfect. Its like the south beach diet Chat Icon. He's eating because he needs it.

IMO 6oz for a 1 month old every 2 1/2 hrs is alot. at 1 month the recommendation is from 18-24oz a day. so even if you always go 4 hours that would put you at 36...but 2.5 puts you way over

nope it depends on the baby ... at least 2.5 oz per pound per day as most ped rec, but some babies take more and its fine

i did read that 2.5 oz per lb rule...but that would mean her one month old was eating enough for a 14-23lb baby. my ped always reminds me that babies stomachs are only as big as their fists and and too much only stretches the belly. sometimes babies just like to suck and they will suck whatever is presented to them, be it bottle or other. my son used to suck my arm, his fist, anything...but feeding him more only gave us problems. I dropped him back down & he's much better.

it could be a growth spurt which explains the ravenous behavior...but how long has it been this way?

He is a big boy. Big babies will need to eat more. At his age, he is really only going to eat out of hunger. And if he eats too much, guess what? He'll spit it up! I'm a feed on demand Mommy, so I say feed him if's he's hungry!

IDK. It seems like a lot IMO. But IDK.

My DD is 12 weeks tomorrow. She was 12lb 11oz last we checked... so she's probably about 13lbs and some oz's.

She is at 4oz on bottles. Rarely does she eat 5 or 6 oz in a sitting. But she will graze eat, meaning she will eat an ounce or two and then stop for an hour and want more....

ETA: I am also feed on demand. We don't do a schedule.. if she's hungry we feed.

There are times when be hits that overflow point and there are times when he looks at me with disgust when I put the bottle in his mouth. Those times, he either needs a burp or to just stop eating. I definitely try the pacidier, but I know he's definitely hungry when he spits it out in disgust after 3 seconds upon realizing there's no food in it.

I heard rule of thumb is 2 1/2 times weight...so if DC was 10 pounds, s/he would eat 25 ounces/day.

Re: How much to feed 1 month old son?

Honestly, that seems like A LOT to me. My DD started 6oz at roughly 8wks and ate every 4-5hrs with a 6hr break for sleeping. I would call the ped because there could be a GI issue more then gas/colic going on. I get he's a big baby, but still 40+oz a day for a 1 month old is a lot IMHO. I also disagree with the PP....babies just eat and eat and eat and formula has a lot of calories in it. There are new studies that suggest, just suggest, that obesity starts in FF babies because of over feeding. Now I bf AND FF the last 6 months so no flames, but I did monitor her formula more and quickly noticed she ate more formula then bm so maybe it's the taste. I also don't know much about the new formula you have him on, but it's specifically for his gas right? Seriously call the ped. I would be concerned.

this. The 2.5 month rule is a good one.

DS ate every 2 hours until he was 4 months. I hated it, but that was when he needed to be fed so that is when he was fed. I would try feeding him less but more often. He was still in 4 oz bottles then. He eats 6 oz every 2.5 to 3 hours now. You might just have a frequent feeder. DS does some solids now and just this week I've noticed he can go 3 hours a lot of the time, hooray!!!
