oh comeon!!! measure the thickness of your door.... go to home depot.... find a lock that looks exactly like the one your replacing.... get a screwdriver and have at it!!! if you fail.. THEN call the locksmith!!! its really easy i swear!!

Our realtor had this service that came in and did all the doors and locks for $79. It was part of their new movers package. FWIW Schlage locks are supposedly good.

$75 for a basic change of the cylinder.
If youre changing the deadbolt, it can be much more expensive.
Which speaking of...I never changed my locks from the previous owners. Do you think they're hanging out here when I go to work? lol

We did it ourselves too. We did a big shopping trip at HD, bought a drill set and the knob/deadbolt among other things... We didn't even measure the thickness of the door like the PP suggested but it worked out anyway.

seriously i did it myself... it wasnt hard... as long as there is already a lock in its place... otherwise i couldnt have imagined myself cutting out a hole... we went to home depot...got a new lock for like $20 and changed it myself... dont get a locksmith... thats redic for this kind of job!

Hmm all these new homeowners in need of someone to change their locks?? Sounds like a new business venture for you! Maybe you should start your own lock changing business for all the new homeowners on LIF 
To answer the OP...my very unhandy DH changed our locks. He cant even find a stud to hang my shelves but he changed our locks!

Seriously - it takes 10 minutes - one of the easiest things to do in a house - 4 screws and your done!
And schlage is definately a great brand and very easy to install!

we had our cylinder/tumbler changed so we did have to change the entire door knob thing. the handle on our front door was one of those fancy ones so it was actually cheaper to pay the 75 bucks to change the tumbler than to buy a whole new thing.

Here's what we did. We removed all of the cyclinders from all of the doors on our house (we have 3 doors, two of which have 2 locks, so total = 5 cylinders). We had my mom stay at the house since the doors had no locks. Then we went to Lowe's purchased 1 new lock, and the guy who works in the "lock" department used the new cyclinder we purchased to make all of the other cyclinders the same such that ALL of our locks open with the same key (big time saver when your house has a front, back, and sunroom door). Didn't know this was possible until I was there. It costs ut about $45.
