How many people are foster parents?
I'm just curious. There are so many children in the foster care system, especially in NY. I was wondering if anyone on LIF is/was/will be a foster parent.

I spoke to DH and I would love to do this once my own kids are in school. It is something I have always wanted to do.

I have no idea what they were paid, but I know that my ILs received a certain amount per child per month (I believe) until they are 18 and they have full health coverage for each child as well.

My best friend was a foster parent..it took a very long time. She had 2 little girls for 2 weeks while their foster parents had a vacation or something like that.
She wants to do it again,but right now has a 1 year old in addition to her 7 year old, and its too much for her right now.

My parents weren't foster parents but we were part of a program called the Fresh Air Fund (I don't know if it still exists). Each summer a child would come and stay with us until the school year started.

My parents were foster parents and over the years we had about 12 different children live with us. Then we adopted my 3 sisters thru the program. Im not really sure if I would want to be a foster parent. While it is truly a selfless thing to do, it is not easy. There are lots of emotions and obsticles to deal with.

I VERY MUCH want to do this. I think once we buy our house i am going to get my application in. I was adopted.. i know what its like... i want to give someone a good life!!

i was adopted along with 2 other sister(who are bio sisters) then we had also twin foster brother(which i do not even call them that) they are my brothers, i have one foster sister and still talk to her. sadly though i did loss touch with one other foster brother and would LOVE TO FIND HIM! they may have been foster children(heck i was on for 7 years before my adoption went through) but i was raised as them all being my sisters and brothers and to this day they are 100% my family

My cousins are foster parents. They have adopted 5 already and the last 3 are up for adoption this month so they'll have 8 kids! I can't imagine the heartache they had to go through when kids they fostered left their homes to go with a biological family member.

I also would love to do this, but not sure I could. I don't think I could handle giving the children back, and would end up adopting all of them.

DH said we culd never do this because i would never give the kids back(he is right) I get too attached and would be a mess if I had to give a child I fell in love with back
plus right now I have 3 of my own and babysit 2 (3mths old and 3yrs old) so its a zoo here as it is
maybe in the future I would like to adopt a child that needs a home and loving parents(then I get to keep them)

I don't think I could be a foster parent, but I would like to adopt someday.
My parents fostered children, the emotions..and the emotions of the child leaving would just be too much for me. My mom had my fister sister from birth to 5 years, and then she went back to her mom...that was the last one..just too hard. My brother was adopted because he was in 20 foster homes by the time he was 20 months..my mom could not let him go through it anymore, thank god, because he is one of my very best friends

it all depends... i used to be a foster care social worker
certain children have certain "rates" depending on their needs - ie: medical, mental health, physical etc..
so for instance, someone who is a foster parent to a child who has CP and has mental health issues will get more than someone who is a foster parent for a child who has no physical limitations and no mental health issues
its sad b/c i have met a lot of foster parents out there who onlt do it for the money

im not really sure what that is, but i also used to do recruitment & basically, you just have to be 21+, pass the home inspection, you must have AMPLE time during the day/night to be there for the foster child (like you cant work a 12 hour day @ a job) and you cant have been found guilty of child abuse or any other serious crime
again, sadly, foster parents that arent meant to be foster parents slip through the cracks
ETA: you also have to go through a training course
