For car seats, it depends on which one (infant vs convertible) you are talking about as well as the size of your baby.

The infant car seat - I have one niece who was in there until about 13 months+ - she is on the smaller side as were her siblings, her sister was about 22 lbs at 14 months. Where as another was only in there for 6 months - the latter was born about 10 lbs and is just a big baby as were her sister & brother.

The convertible car seat, my niece and cousin are still in there at 3 and 4 years old each.

From what I have noticed with strollers, the parents generally upgrade for one reason or another (2nd kid, something lighter ie umbrella stroller) before the child actually outgrows it.

I set out to register for both a stroller and a car seat that I can use straight through.

My car seat (Alpha Omega Elite Convertible) is rear-facing 5-35 lbs, forward facing 22-40 lbs and toddler booster up to 100lbs.

My stroller (Bumbleride Flyer) has 5point positioning and is safe 0 months +.

Many friends have the infant car seat b/c they use the snap and go mobility. I, a weakling, cannot carry that car seat with a baby in it more than four feet so it would have been a waste for us.

ETA: we'll get a cheap umbrella stroller for when the baby becomes a toddler / can walk a little on his/her own but that's pretty far in the future so I didn't bother registering for that now.

My daughter was out of her infant carrier by I would say around 9 months. She was then put into a convertible car seat rear facing. She still uses that same car seat now at 2 1/2 forward facing. She can probably stay in that car seat for another 2 years or so until she is ready for a booster. As for the stroller we had gotten a travel system and we still use that stroller for anything other than quick trips into a store. Quick trips we use her cheap umbrella stroller. How that helps.

Travel system stroller -2 yrs
Infant car seat 11 mths.
Convertable car seat- 1.5 years
Booster seat-current

I use the light weight stroller mainly for travel or long trips to an event even now at 3.5.

Light weight/umbrella stroller was (is being used) used from 9mths. on.
