How many meals/snacks for a toddler/kid?

Right now, my 20 month old and almost 5 year old eat 3 meals and 2 snacks. Is his the norm? I'm wondering if they really need 2 snacks? They definitely eat better at mealtime without the snacking, but is it better for them to have frequent small meals?

That's actually what's recommended. 3 meals and 2 snacks. But it totally varies by kid, by day.

During the week when my DD is at Daycare, she gets 2 meals and 2 snacks and then has dinner home with us.

On the weekend she will always get 3 meals and maybe 1 snack. It really depends on what we are doing.

Sounds normal but my DS will vary day to day. Sometimes he comes home from school with his entire lunch that I sent, and only ate his snack. He is not underweight so I'm not worried.

I occasionally give a snack but often give no snack. If she snacks passed 4pm she'll hardly eat dinner.

DS has about 5 snacks a day when it's up to him. He's a grazer. I don't worry about it.

Generally 3 meals, 2 snacks, but sometimes when at home we will skip morning snack if she gets up late (eats bkfst late). Conversely, if we have later dinner plans (ie with family), she may have 2 afternoon snacks.

My extremely hungry 20 month old eats probably the equivalent of 6+ meals a day. I have no clue what the norm is. I try to space it out but he constantly wants to eat. I'm trying to help him distinguish between hunger versus other feelings like tiredness or frustration... I think he gets these mixed up & often eats when he doesn't need it. I think 3 meals & 2 snacks sounds like a perfect amount.

My kids are always eating Chat Icon. They are still such skinny kids but I swear they want to eat every 5 minutes. One of my sons is going through a very picky phase now with meals and I've given up trying to battle him, but he snacks all day. I don't worry about it. I don't give them junk so I let them eat when they're hungry.

I'm going to have to take out a 2nd mortgage for food when my boys are teenagers.Chat Icon

My DS is the same, he is a beasts and eats all day. He has his 3 meals and will snack all day. And when i have my 17yr old SS for the weekend. I have to stock up so much just for the two days, always in the fridge. When he was with us this summer is was like a second mortgage. Lol

My DD is 27 months she eats so many snacks I don't know what to do and she is a stick lol. She eats her meals too. I think so long as they are eating their meals and not filling up on junk eating healthy snacks then it's ok to snack more. She has also gone through phases where she barely eats lol

My DS eats all day. He loves his snacks. He eats his meals well so I don't care. He's also small for his age so I'm hoping all this eating will encourage growth.

Yup, normal. A great way to fit in an extra fruit or veggie serving too.

Adults are supposed to eat this way too, it's good for our metabolism

Dd eats nonstop except dinner, she is not a fan. She has two solid meals and 4 or 5 healthy snacks. I never say no to apple sauce or fruit which is what she usually requests for snacks.

DD is 20 mos and she eats all day. She's not a fan of sitting down to a meal, but I would say she prob eats about 5 times a day.

This is my 3 year old exactly. He doesn't eat much for dinner, but has a good breakfast and lunch and several healthy snacks. There's no set amount of snacks they take. My 5 year old isn't as big of an eater and has his 3 main meals and maybe 1 - 2 snacks a day. Usually something small like a yogurt or banana while my 3 year old will have pretzels, grapes, banana, goldfish, blueberries and strawberries, etc.

Same here... Usually it is 2 meals (not a fan of breakfast) and 4 snacks..

My daughter is a little over 2 and is a grazer just like me. She always has 3 meals a day and usually 2 snacks. She is such a slow eater though that it takes her so lunch to finish her meals. She usually starts in her high chair and then I will keep it out for her to pick and she will usually finish most of it.
