How many 3way and 4way light switches do you have?
I was just thinking the other day about how many 3-way (two switches for one light) and 4-way (three switches for one light) I have, and just wondering if we have a lot more than average. I've never been in another house with quite as many 3 and 4way switches.
3-way - 4
4-way - 3
Most people have a 3-way on the stairs, but we also have one in the basement and the office, since it has an interior and exterior entrance. We also have one in a quasi-hallway, since there are multiple entrances.
The dining room, living room and hallway by DC's rooms have 4-ways, since there are either 3 or 4 ways to get into those areas.

Why are they called 3 way switches if they are in 2 places?  We have 4 - 3 way switches but we could totally do without one. I have never used it except by accident.

we have 2- 3 way switches
back flood lights - controls in dining room(exit house) and master bedroom - if needed at night
entry lights above garage - controls in garage and main entrance
2 - 4 way - lower area entry
stairway
1 -5 way - upstairs hallway -one at entry to hallway and one at each of three bedrooms

Have you ever wondered why they are called "3-way circuits" when there are only 2 switches? Well, it has to do with the number of "drop points" and not the number of switches in the circuit. You see back in the early days of electrical wiring, back in the days of Thomas Edison, the vocation of "electrician" was brand new. These new electricians would base their cost estimates partly on the number of "drop points" on each circuit. A drop point could be a switch, a load or any junction point. In a sense a circuit with only 1 switch and 1 load would be a "2-way". I suppose this was because the wires had to go "two different ways". A circuit with 2 switches and 1 load would be "3-way". Incidentally, a circuit with 1 switch and 2 loads would also be a 3-way, but over the years, the label of "3-way" has evolved into meaning any circuit with 2 switches in it.

A 3 way switch has 3 connection points that the electrician has to connect. 2 switches and one light.
I guess my one 3-way is actually a 5-way, since there are 3 light fixtures, and the 4 way upstairs has 2 lights..... but I only count switches, not connection points.

I never even heard of a 4-way light switch! I guess I can't imagine living in a house with a room that big.

We only have one (or does it count as 2  ) for our staircase. One at the bottom of the steps and one at the top.

3 3-way Switches:
*Master Bedroom (high hats - bedroom door has the dimmer, french doors have the standard switch.)
*Hallway by the bedrooms (still need to replace one of the switches with a dimmer.)
*Shed (we can turn on/off the shed lights from inside the house and within the shed.)

You don't need a big room. I have a hallway with a 4-way. There are 5 entrances to the hallway. At the top of the stairs, you turn right, and enter the hallway. DC's bedrooms, the library and the bathroom are all off of this hall. We have 3 switches in this average size (20') hallway.
