This is what mrsErod said on another thread about the same topic:

typically, once an offer is accepted, the next step is for the buyer to have an inspection done. once the inspection is complete, the buyers attorney then draws up the contracts (assuming the inspection was fine)...the buyer then signs the contracts, and the contracts are then sent to the sellers attorney (along with the DP). once the sellers sign the contracts, THAT is when it is considered "in full contract"... (this whole process normally takes an average of two weeks)....usually, the closing date is set for 60 days, (on or about)..from the contract date.

Example:

1/1 - offer is accepted

1/15 - formal contracts to be signed

3/15 - closing date (on or about - legally, the closing can take place up to 30 days BEFORE 3/15, or up to 30 days AFTER 3/15)

it varies greatly, depending on the parties involved. We went from contract to closing in 30 days, but both sides were motivated to move quickly and we had a mortgage company that could also.

Thats not the norm though. I'd say 30-60 days is a more reasonable estimate.

we did ours in exactly 2 months, from contract being signed to closing. it would have been 2 weeks less but their was a title problem.

It varies alot...we started looking in March 2005, found the house in July, went to contract on July 5 and closed on September 15...so for us it was six weeks from contract to close, but the sellers wanted to get out.
