How long does a typical point and shoot digital camera last?
I'm wondering if I'm really hard on cameras or what? I've only had this camera for a year and a half. In every setting it has shakey lines when I go to take a picture. It takes the pic and then the lines and blur is there. I don't want to send it out for repair because I can probably buy a new one for the cost. It's a Panasonic Lumix which is a good camera. It should last longer than that right? Within the last 7 years I have been through about 5 different digital cameras.

I've had my current one for about 4 years with no issues.
The one before that starting having some issues here and there after maybe 3 years- plus it just got outdated technology wise so we upgraded.

I've had just about every brand of camera under the sun and I usually think I treat them pretty well and they still always break after a year and a half, sometimes less! It's become a running joke in our house not to trust me with a point and shoot camera. This is the reason DH got the extended warranty and insurance for SLR camera. We were taking no chances there! lol!

i have had canon cameras that last forever...
my last one worked for 5 years...and then my sister borrowed it and broke it
the one i have now is going on year 4 and still in great shape

My Canon Powershot is probably about 4-5 years old. It's made it through careless nights of dropping in multiple times and it's still going strong! I really like the camera for a point and shoot and all of the settings, so I hope it doesn't break anytime soon.

i have point and shoots that are over 9yrs old and still work.. doesnt mean i take any pictures with them.
it all depends on how they are treated and how happy you are with the quality of the photos...
DW's cameras... now thats another story. we actually have a designated "Bar Camera" which refuses to die no matter how much alcohol is poured on it... and there are a few that she has dropped on tile floors etc...
i would say over all.. a good digital camera should last you at least 4-5 yrs with regular use.

it all depends on the quality of a camera. You can buy a $75 point and shoot and I would only expect it to last a few years and if your rough a year at best.
I would say if you invest $300+ you should get at least 4-5 years unless your a big picture taker. Each camera has a click life.
If you get one that is upper hundreds to a 1K I would expect it to last a heck of a lot longer then that.

I have a Fuji that I don't pamper, and it's still going strong after 5+ years. I bought a new Canon, just because I wanted some additional features, but we're still using the old camera.

Are you sure you're not just trying to take too many pics in low light? Does it do the same with the flash on?
Have you tried cleaning the lens? It may be that it can't focus properly.
I've had my Nikon P&S for like 4 years. I really don't use it much since I have a DSLR, but it's good as new.

I still have my first digital camera I ever owned by canon and it works great. No idea how old it is but it's 5.0 megapixels that should tell you something. Its not as good quality pictures as the newer ones but I've never had to replace it...

Well, if you're me, they last no longer than two years b/c you either break it and/or lose it.
Seriously, I have one camera that got lost in Jillians (before it was Dave & Busters), one that disappeared in Stowe, Vermont (it stayed at Ben & Jerry's for some ice cream), and one in a cab somewhere in Cozumel. That last one I managed to break slightly before losing it. My most recent camera I dropped in the airport heading home from Aruba and the screen stopped working. Just got a new camera for Chanukah...we took an extended warranty.

my original digital P&S was by casio. it took 2 AA batteries and i think was 4MB. ive dropped it a bunch of times and it has scrathes all over it, but it still works!! i gave it to my 7 year old niece to play around with. lol.

Really depends on how often you use your camera and how well you care for it. I think a quality DSLR should last 6-7 years for most people.

I have a 35MM SLR from the 60's.. very used. Buttons and knobs have come off but the light meter, mirror, shutter, all work perfectly.
I don't know how the electronics factor impacts DSLRs, but I would still think they last a long time.
