The guidelines say until at least 2 years old unless they hit the height/weight limit for RFing for your seat first

How long do we keep them RF?
Most convertible seats can be RF up to 40 pounds now (although they vary with heights) reasoning behind the 2 year old recommendation is that they are safer in event of an accident, as their heads and necks won't be thrown forward with the force from the accident. Their neck muscles are much better developed at 2 years old then the old recommendation of 1.
