How long did your newborn typically sleep at night?

DS has been sleeping for four-five hours at night, waking to eat and going back to bed and sleeping another 3-5 hours.

Is this normal? Will it change? I am grateful but wondering if newborns do this at first and then they sleep for shorter periods of time. He is 9 days old.

Thanks Chat Icon

Re: How long did your newborn typically sleep at night?

My newborn was an excellent sleeper from day one and slept for 4-5 hours at night the first 2 weeks. Now at 2 months he sleeps 6-8 hours a night and has been doing so since before he was 4 weeks!

Totally normal! Be thankful for it.

I remember that my DD's first five-hour stretch was on 12/24. She was 3 weeks old and we called it The Christmas Miracle. Her sleep patterns flip on me constantly though. Your baby's will too.

I wish.
DD from day 1 was up every 2-3 hours. It was torture.
It made me realize I was one and done!

You are lucky and enjoy it!!

This is the 3rd time I've heard this saying! LOL Some woman told me in Carter's "once he hits 12 pounds he's going to sleep all the time" I was so excited!

Unfortunately, it was 14 pounds before DS was STTN. Chat Icon

That would be awesome ds is 11-11worse right now!

She is 7 weeks and wakes every -3 sometimes 4 hours, but its just to feed and she falls back to sleep eating.

You are lucky!

But check with your Ped...mine didn't want DD going more than 3 hours without eating for the first few weeks. DD never allowed it anyway Chat Icon

For the first 2 weeks I'd wake her after 3 or hours - most books said to, and I was EBFing and convinced that she wasn't getting enough food. But she more than gained her birth weight back after 7 days and so when she was 2 weeks old, I just let her sleep and saw what happened.

She would typically sleep from 7:30 to 7, in 3 and 4 hour stretches (waking twice to eat, usually at 11:00 and 3:30 or so).

Please.
Utter BS.
My DD was almost 20 pounds and 7 months old before sleeping thru the night. For us, it wasn't about weight or getting up to eat. She woud just get up and cry. And cry. And scream. I don't even think she was getting up from hunger.
