How long did separation anxiety/mommy preference last for your DC?

8m old DS suddenly developed severe separation anxiety this weekend. We went to the IL's and he hated it if I left the room. Prior to Thanksgiving, DS seemed to be fine when I went in and out of the room. When we got home, DS prefered me constantly too. Whenever I was out of his sight or not holding him, he would start to cry. Usually he can go to me or DH with no problems.

I think it goes in stages. My kids had it around then. Now one of my sons is really bad(he just turned a year) If he even sees me walking towards the door he gets hysterical

That's normal behavior. My DD got like that too around that age and then slowly it went away and she got comfortable with other people. I think when they are little they are always going through periods where they prefer one person to another or have some level of stranger anxiety. Even now at 14 months my DD really doesn't care too much for older men. She shys away from them and isn't really too quick to play with them or let them hold her. I'm sure that too will pass. Yup...DD had this at that age, lasted for a while, now at 11.5 months it's a bit better, but still def prefers me over anyone, and on certain days it's bad, for instance yesterday she didn't allow DH to put her down for a nap she screamed her head off, today, she went down with him in a matter of minutesChat Icon

Katie has it really bad right now - she is 16 months. She wont even go to my mom who she sees all the time.

At that age, maybe about a month, so not very long. I just had to keep reassuring him that I would be back when I left him for any amount of time, and eventually he got it.

But it does come back. For him, it did around 15-16 months. And again now at 2 years, though now it mostly relates to being left alone to sleep. I think it pops up each time there is a big developmental leap.
