Once i put paint on the walls! Paint makes a home feel more homey to me... if that makes sense. Chat Icon

And then even more so when i began to put pictures up.

Once we started getting "real" furniture in and things on the walls (although 3 years later I am still struggling with thisChat Icon ). When everything was brand new it was like you didn't want to use anything, but I would say after a few months it really felt like homeChat Icon

Re: How long did it take...

2 yrs.

we had our house built. we moved in July 15, 2005.

We didnt have much furniture b/c we did not take much from NY. We wanted all new.

when we moved in, you could tell we were the broke newlyweds with no furniture but a big house Chat Icon we had a futon in the living room as a couch, 2 snack tables to eat off, and a wall unit in a box we got from wal-mart. our bedroom had an air mattress in the bedroom, the tv on the floor and all our stuff in the closet. then when the air mattress started to get annoying we had our mattress on the floor.

Our house was empty. the front two rooms had nothing, the office had just the computer and the guest room had nothing. we did hang some stuff on the walls, but nothing major. I didnt want too much. just a few things to give it a nice accent.

Slowly over a year and a half we started to furnish one room at a time. We furnished the living room first. We took the futon and put that in the office and the wall unit in a box went into the office. so the living room and office got nicely furnished. My parents got us our bedroom set. So we took what we did have in our bedroom (a night stand, tv stand and a small dresser we had gotten to at least have in the room) we moved to the guest room. We also had inflated the air mattress in the guest room to make it look more inviting. finally got a dining set for the dining room. this still left the front room empty.

Then this year we got a whole new living room set. leather couch, big screen, new coffee tables, etc...all the stuff that was in the living room we moved to the front living room.

We then painted. We painted one wall in the living room, one wall in our bedroom and 2 walls in the master bathroom.

finally after 2 years, every room is fully furnished, the walls are painted (I do want to eventually paint the guest bathroom), and I have just the perfect amount of things hung on the wall. It feels like home Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: How long did it take...

We are just moving everything over to our new house. We have had it for about a week, but we have been doing some work, so we will be officially living there tomorrow. All week I have been there working, but I have been uncomfortable. I hope that it is because our stuff isn't all out, not that it is not a comfortable house. Hearing that it took some people a year scares me a bit!

I totally agree. Once we took down wallpaper and painted we felt like we were at home. Adding colors that you like really makes a difference.

Then we felt even more at home when we put up window treatments and hung things on the walls.

I wouldn't worry about the time it takes.

Everything is relative. Some people had to do some work on their house so it may have taken longer.

We basically had to take down wallpaper and paint and update a few things like light fixtures and switchplates and etc... Therefore we felt like home in about a month.

Re: How long did it take...

That's an interesting question! I think I still don't feel completely at home in our house. We moved in May '06. I don't know why. We've painted, completely redid a bathroom, etc. It's gradually getting more "home" but it's not 100% yet.

Re: How long did it take...

Tonight is our first official night here. It was a rough start-- DH is already asleep, but I am still awake and a little nervous. Hopefully it will be a good night!

Re: How long did it take...

How did it go? Did you make it through the first night?

That is always the hardest. I remember being exhausted that first night from moving but still had a hard time sleeping.

Re: How long did it take...

It was definitely weird, but I made it! When I woke up, I was a little freaked out, but I got up and went over to my parents house for breakfast, and calmed down a bit. The problem with me is that DH works alot, especially at night, so he is never around. It is going to be hard to get used to being alone alot. Thank God for LIF!

We've been there about 10 months and some days it feels like home, other's not so much. I have a hard time with change, so I think it will continue to take me a while.

Re: How long did it take...

It was weird the first few nights of living there but after that it felt like our home. It helped that christmas was a week after we moved in and the whole family was over for christmas eve.

It did feel like a dream though......but a really good dream
