How long.....
do you let your baby cry before you pick him/her up? DH says let him cry for 1/2 hr and then pick him up. I can't do that.

Re: How long.....
Honestly, at this point, she's only 2 weeks old, so I don't really let her cry too much. She needs to feel secure. I do let her fuss though without picking her up. But not all out crying. But like I said, she's only 2 weeks old. When she's older, that'll change.

Re: How long.....
I usually pick my baby up after he makes his first peep...
Thats why I can't put him down now.
But I hate to hear him cry when I know I can make him feel better in a second.

Re: How long.....
See, now, I can handle her crying if I know I'm the one taking care of her. If someone else is holding her and she starts crying, it takes every ounce of self-restraint for me to not grab her from them and calm her down. But I don't want to end up with a baby that will ONLY calm herself with me because that will be a recipe for disaster in a few months! So, I have to go in the other room when JT is trying to calm her.

You see, Noah gets this look in his eyes that says...I can see you, but I can't understand why you aren't holding me. Please hold me. This lady/man who is holding me now isn't nearly as nice and comforting as you are. Please take me away from this person. I can see you, I know you are there. PLEASE HOLD ME. PLEASE
So I Have to hold him.

Re: How long.....
Oh wow - a half hour? No way. Not at this age. When they are little babies like this you're not supposed to let them cry it out at all.

Re: How long.....
I agree with the pp that 1/2 hour is too long. The longest I would say is 10 minutes.

Re: How long.....
The longest has been 5 minutes and it is usually becaue I have to warm the bottle up. I do let him fuss. When we are in the car though that is a different story. Ther have been times were I was stuck in traffic with nowhere to go and he has cried for close to 1/2 hour. I felt horrible but I had no control over the sitution, city traffic is a b****.

Re: How long.....
If its a real cry I pick her up as soon as I can get to her...if its a fuss then I let her fuss for a couple of minutes...
I have pulled the car over a few times when she was crying so hard I thought she would burst a vein...of course as soon as I took her out of the car seat she was fine
I am not a CIO parent nor is my DH....it will be interesting to see if we have a spoiled brat on our hands in a few years but for now she cries....one of us picks her up......
I cannnot bear the sound of a baby crying...I was on line at the post office the other day and there was a lady on front of me with two kids..one was about 3 and the other just a few weeks old...well the baby was crying soooooooooo hard and she was ignoring him and talking to the three year old...my heart was breaking for the little baby...I wanted to knock her out of the way and take him out of the stroller and give him a cuddle but I would have probably gotten arrested so tried to block his cries out....

Re: How long.....
I think the most I have ever gone was 10 minutes and that was when I was at the end of my rope so letting her cry was the better option. Most of the time if she is crying I go to her right away unless I am in the middle of doing something and need to finish up or if I am trying to get her to sleep I will let her cry for 1 minute exactly (yes I pretty much time it). If she doesn't settle down I go into her but this usually doesn't happen, she usually goes right to sleep. That is why I know if she's crying something is up.

Re: How long.....
I never ever let her cry if I could help it until she was at least 5 months old.

Re: How long.....
Mine is 2 months old and if she is really crying I try to get to her right away. When she first wakes up and is just fussing and fidgeting, I leave her. I wait until she gives a good cry before I pick her up. I know that in another 2 months or so, this will change or else I'm afraid she will become manipulative and unable to comfort herself. I don't think I will try that though until she is at least 4 months (that is what I've heard is the earliest to do it).

Re: How long.....
it always depends on the situation for us. If it's nap time or bedtime, then I would wait 5 min, then 10 and so forth. If it's just sitting down in a play setting or non-sleep setting I would asses the situation and play it by ear. You know your child best and will make the choice that suits all of you.
