How hard is it to put in a dishwasher...
where there is not one already?
Do you have to disturb the countertop?

I believe it is a big task...and I am only going by this because when I was house-hunting, I saw a house with a great kitchen but no dishwasher, only a portable one, and I think I recall being told it would disturb the countertop and may not even be possible, as far as the plumbing goes. I could be wrong.

i don't know for sure or first hand, but we do not have a dishwasher in our new house and SIL's boyfriend who is handy asked us if we have a few cabinets we wouldn't mind getting rid of because he could put one in for us. he didn't make it sound too hard, but he didn't go into further detail. not sure if that helps you or not. good luck!

you need to be able to do light plumbing, moderate electrical and have the right tools to cut and remove the cabinets. The counter should just saty in place-dishwashers have adjustable legs so they can fit under most counters.

I put in my own dishwasher. We didn't even have a cabinet to remove to put one in, so I built a cabinet shell, ran the electrical, ran the plumbing and drain, and hooked everything up. 12+ years later, and it's still working... 
As long as you are handy, and can run basic electric, simple soldering, and basic carpentry, it can be done.
