How far were you along before you told your family?

DH's cousin was pregnant and due in April but there were complications and the baby died Chat Icon She was only pregnant about 4-5 weeks before she told everyone. Mostly it was because her mother can't keep her mouth shut so she called everyone to tell them before her mother did. DH's family can't keep their mouth shut and when we get pregnant I want to tell my ILs but I don't the entire family to know right away. Did you have to deal with this?

We waited to tell the family until I was pretty far along, about 11 weeks. I wanted to make sure everything was going as it should before saying anything. The whole family knew by the next day. It's going to be very hard to just tell the parents and not expect them to say anything because they will be so overjoyed by the news and want to tell everyone....even the mailman! Chat Icon

Re: How far were you along before you told your family?

We told BIL & FSIL the night we found out but they are both vaults, and didn't tell anyone. We told our parents at 6 weeks. My dad has a Chat Icon & so does MIL. My dad told everyone he works with, so did MIL. I think my dad told the lady at the bank, and whoever else he could get away. Oh, and some of the neighbors on their block. Chat Icon I kept yelling at him every time we talked I would find out he told someone else. We told the rest of my family at 9 weeks after our first sono, and we saw the heartbeat. Actually my dad then told the rest of the family. Chat Icon

Re: How far were you along before you told your family?

I told my mom the day I got my BFP (AF wasn't late yet)... solely because we had just gone through a MC, surgery to remove cysts and then an ectopic... so we wanted to have someone for support just in case. Plus, we knew she would keep her mouth shut. As for the ILs we waited 'til I was 10 weeks before we said anything.

HTH!

Re: How far were you along before you told your family?

We told our immediate family (parents, Brother's, sisters, nieces and nephews) after my first appt at 6w5d.

We thought even if something happened they would know since we're all close.

In terms of keeping it private after that DH's family was great about it...they didn't say anything to anyone until well after my 12 weeks which is the time DH and I had asked for. My family on the other hand were the big mouths. I got into a full blown heated arguement with my mother about it...basically telling her that had I known that she couldn't respect our wishes I wouldn't have told her.

It's tough...I also wasn't hired permanently at my job yet so I was trying to not tell any of my colleagues.

Same with us.

My dad and my ILs would've been able to wait to tell but, we made my mom wait one day and she was about to burst!

We told them at 11w3d because they were at our house. I made her wait until the next day after my Dr. appt to tell EVERYONE - and she did tell EVERYONE.

Re: How far were you along before you told your family?

The first time I was PG, we didn't tell anyone right away and I ultimately miscarried. We told our families about the miscarriage.

This time, our families knew about our IF issues and that we were undergoing IVF. We were not planning on telling the dates of our retrieval and transfer, but our famlies were very supportive and we did tell them. So we weound up telling our immediate family right away.

I didn't tell ANYONE- even my parents and sister etc until I was close to 11 weeks
I'm 13 weeks now and a lot of people still don't know.

We told my parents the day after our BFP, DH sisters, and my best friend. I'm so bad, I can never wait to tell good news.

Re: How far were you along before you told your family?

I'm 10 weeks today and we still haven't told the whole family. Not that it's a secret or anything it's just family politics. you know having to tell both sides at the same time and with the holidays and this being my DD's 1st christmas were still undecided as to if were going to tell them on christmas or the day after, when everyones together.

My mother found out by accident at 6 weeks. We had our first appointment at 7 weeks and then told MIL. We swore her and my mom to secrecy, we were nervous something would go wrong and did NOT want anyone else in the families to know until 12 weeks.

We told DH's family at 12 weeks and the rest of my family at 14 weeks when we had a family reunion.
