How does your name play into naming your baby?

My name is Eleanor.... and the only other Eleanors I have ever met were over 60 years old... I hated my name growing up and still think its pretty awful. Anyway, I don't want to give my dc a very uncommon name, and I want to give the a lot of nick name opitons that aren't awful.

Re: How does your name play into naming your baby?

My name was uncommon and I liked it that way. I liked always being the only Alissa in my class....in my grade for that matter. So I'd like to do the same with him. I don't want to name him a name that's like in the top 10 of baby names, kwim? Also, since we know it's a boy, I don't want to name him after DH, neither does DH. We both have a thing about jrs. We're just not fans personally....we're trying to find a nice, not too common irish name that we both like.

Re: How does your name play into naming your baby?

My Dh's name is Mike and he did not want that for his sons. My name is Melissa which is not too popular but not too unusual. Our boys' names lean more toward the unusual

If its a girl, her middle name will be my maiden name. If its a boy, he will be named after my DH and his father (same name) and his middle name will be my dads name.

DH is Joseph, I am Kathleen. Our son is Joseph also, but only because it is a huge family name on both sides of the family. Kathleen was never very popular when I was growing up, but it wasn't considered strange either.

With this baby
Chat Icon Nicholas Tyler
Chat Icon Lea Elizabeth

so I guess you can say they are common, but not the most popular, KWIM?

Re: How does your name play into naming your baby?

My parents came to the US when my mom was 7 months pregnant with me, she did not want to name me anything ethnic in fear that I would be made fun of growing up, so she picked the most popular name in 1979, Jennifer...
I always liked more unusual names, DH is Brian, he likes more traditional names, so we're trying to comprimise on something in between...I think he's winningChat Icon

Re: How does your name play into naming your baby?

Not pg, but I think we have names picked out for when we are... one day...

I have a favorite Chat Icon name -- not similar to my name or DH's name, a little trendy but not super trendy, still up in the air on a middle name. In the Jewish religion you take the first initial of a passed loved one and name the baby after them, and the first initial happens to be the same as my dad's late father... so it works perfectly, assuming we one day have a Chat Icon

girls name.... well, I had one I loved but it sounds awful with our last name and Chat Icon WOULD be teased for the combination, so it's out. My parents loved my name so much that they named me it anyway even though I had awful initials before marrying DH. I didn't really get teased all that much for it, but I wouldnt want to give my DC a name that would get them teased. My favorite girl name right now is a common but not super trendy name, a little similar to mine. If I make my maiden name my middle name, we'd use my old middle name as Chat Icon middle name

Im Jenn, SO common. DH is Rex. he HATES his name and how its always referred to as a dogs name.

So needless to say he wants common, Mike, Joe, Bob names where Im leading towards something a bit less common.

We have a happy medium as of now. But we have changed this poor kids name 3 times already.

Re: How does your name play into naming your baby?

I like unique names-- or rather, names that are not necessarily weird, but are less common. I always liked that about my name.

What I did HATE, and still do about my name-- everyone always spells it wrong (with a y), and people don't necessarily know I am a female from my name-- unless of course they see me in person.

DH and I love "old" names that are not too weird, but not common either. I've always loved the nickname Maddie, but felt Madison has gotten too popular (and I always LOVED that name!).

We named Madelyn Rose after my grandmother. Baby #2 will be Eliza Jean- after DH's great aunt who is in her 90s and smart as a whip. I am thrilled to honor her.

My first name, which is Elizabeth, will most likely be our DD's middle name. Except I like the Elisabeth spelling better so we'll probably go with that. Chat Icon

DH and I just wanted something original for our children's names. Our first DD is named Piper. Our names chosen for the new baby will be pretty original as well.

Our names didnt come into play at all when choosing names for our daughter. We went classic Old Testament for her first and middle names.

Re: How does your name play into naming your baby?

both of our names didnt even come up..he never wanted a III cause hes always hated being a junior, and being a Jaime, and never being able to get anything personalized because they always spell it wrong never really bothered me, so i knew i wanted our Chat Icon to have something different..really unique :)
since i was due around christmas i realllllly
tried to get my DH to consider
Noellani Shea (calling her No-lie) for short
it means "sent from Heaven" and i loved how it blended around Christmas (Noel)

Anyway, i didnt win, BUT her name sounds very similar to that and her middle name is still Shea (cause my husband is crazy and infatuated with the Stadium) The name is actually an Italian Saints name, so we're both happy with it :)

I only know one other person with the name we picked for the baby...so its definately original

Both DH and I have very common names Jennifer and Michael. When we were trying to decide on a name, originally I liked Emily and just call her Emmy for short. Then when we found out for sure it was a girl, DH wanted to name her after his grandfather, so her name had to start with an S. We had 5 choices - Sarah or Sara, Shannon, Stefanie, Shealyn or Shaylie. First DH liked Stefanie but I wanted her to have something different so I told him that I really liked Shaylie and that was it. Its similiar to DH's grandfather's name which was Shia. Not to mention, DH and I are huge Mets fans and I was going to Shea since I was 7yrs old, so it was also appropriate to have Shay part of her name, even though the spelling is different.

Re: How does your name play into naming your baby?

Growing up i hated my name. Everyone thought i was named after Whitney Houston (which i wasn't) and people thought they were totally original in coming up with the correlation (some still do). Needless to say, that got old by the time i was 6. Now I enjoy the uniqueness of my name - not necessarily the name itself. Up until very recently I had never met another Whitney before, which I think is pretty cool. So in that aspect, like some others said, I didn't want to go with any top 10 names for either a Chat Icon or a Chat Icon . But i didn't want to go too unusual or trendy either.
DH is Joseph and vowed he would never name his Chat Icon Joseph. It's possible for a middle name down the line if we have another Chat Icon though.

Lol, Eleanor was my first choice for a girls name! I love it. It has lots of great nick names too, we would have gone for Nell

Re: How does your name play into naming your baby?

DH has a common name and I don't think that it ever bothered him. I however have a somewhat uncommon one that no one could ever spell or pronounce and it drove me crazy. Not to mention that I could NEVER find anything with my name on it when I was little - meanwhile my siblings (Paul, Melissa and Brian) had tons of stuff. I definitely wanted more mainstream names for our kids.

Both my name and DH's start with J's, so we have stayed away from J names - we didn't want it too cutesy with all J names for the family.

My name also doesn't really have a nickname, so choosing names that have nicknames was very important to me as well.
