Originally they went by my last period, but since my periods are not regular they had to re-date the pregnancy through sono went from May 22 to May 29

Re: How does the dr calculate
my doctor does it by last AF, but then uses the sonograms as their more exact date....my sono dated me a day or two later but since it was minimal she kept af date. however, if its a week or so off they will go based on the sono

Re: How does the dr calculate
In nursing school they taught us Naegele's Rule where you subtract 3 from the month, add 7 to the days and adjust the year if needed from the lmp.

But doesn't that only work if you have a "regular" 28 day cycle with ovulation at day 14

Your new cycle starts on the first day of your period. So that eggs journey started then as well.

How does the dr calculate
They generally go by lmp. If you don't know lmp they go by the 8 week sono. Also if 8 week sono shows a date that differs from lmp by a week or more, they go by sono.
For my current pregnancy, my lmp would have had me due June 18. My O date based on opks and temping would have had me due June 14. My first sono had me at June 11. Dr went with June 11 because it was a week off of my lmp date.

They generally go by LMP.... but since I have a irregular cycles and I knew when i ovulated, that is what my dr calculated it by.

How does the dr calculate
its so stupid but most go by last AF. when i went to my OB for the first time i was like 10w and i did IVF so i had already had like 4 sonos at my RE. but the dr STILL wanted to go by AF which means absolutely nothing during an IVF cycle since you get AF after the BCP/suppression portion of the cycle so that it's timed appropriately. anyway i argued this and he still kept it at 8w until i went in for the sono at which point i measured EXACT to the date of my egg retrieval (equivalent to ovulation day)... silly doctors...
