How do you make sure that...

Your workmen are doing a good job without hanging over their shoulders all stinking day??

We have the tilers in and they seem to be doing a really good job, to be honest, I let them just get to it. You know, check in on them every hour or so...but when they left yesterday afternoon I realised that in two places the tiles were wonky! Totally lopsided! So this morning when they came I said that I wasn't happy with that and they said, no problem, we will chisel them out and start again in that section...which was the right answer....but how do you make sure your tradesmen are doing a good job without watching them all bloody day...

At the end of the day they are there to do a job. You would have to inspect it anyway at the end to make sure they did what you paid them for. In terms of watching them all day I am not sure you can unless you're an expert at what they do. What you're doing now is probably all you can do- at least they know ur watching them somehow and taking note of what they are doing. I don't really hover over people that do work in our house- just check in every hr-2 hrs or so to see if all is good and if they need anything.

Well, my Dh hangs over them all day. I know it drives them nuts but he is so meticulous that they would wind up having to fix things if he wasn't there. The painter is pretty much left alone and the floor guys get a break but I feel bad for the fence people, my mason, electrician, plumber and carpenter. Most are friends so they understand how he is. He chalks it up to "helping" them. Which he does do but mostly he's watching them.
