How do you know when it's time to stop the swaddle?

DS is 15 weeks. Just wondering if I should keep going or try and break him.

I did see a post a week or so ago on how to break it but just wondering how you knew when it was time?

good question-i think it's when they break out a lot or just seems more uncomfortable than not. i keep trying with my 10 wk old but it ain't happening! he's a squirmy worm and needs the confinement. i am planning on doing it in the next few weeks. with my DD i did it at about 15 weeks. it was a rough night or 2 but then got better.

I'm wondering that myself. My DD is 5 months and still swaddled. She is a very fidgety/restless sleeper. I was wondering last week if it was b/c of the swaddle -- that she was trying to break out of it. So we tried a night without it and she was the same.

For us DD was breaking out of the miracle blanket back at 4 weeks - but she still needed it. I had to stop when she started rolling at night IN the miracle blanket and I was afraid she would get hurt.

I was going to post the same thing...DD is only two months so I know we have some time, but she is just such a restless sleeper, I'm wondering if that will change as she gets a little older and she won't need the swaddle as much, or if it will stay the same and it will be a real pain to break the habit.

For us it was when they started consistently rolling over onto their bellies to sleep. It was around 5.5-6 months.

DD is 4 months and was swaddled since day one in the miracle blanket for night and swaddle me for her morning nap. This is going to be her 3rd night w/o swaddling-she was breaking out and I felt it was time to stop. She has been ok, she moves a lot more now but stays asleep. I was so nervous to stop-good luck!

Re: How do you know when it's time to stop the swaddle?

My pediatrician suggested at our 8 week appointment to take her out of it. I started that night - I figured better to break the habit early on, rather than later when it would be harder anyway.

It took about 4 nights of a few more wakings than usual, but within a few days she was right back to sleeping 8+ hours through the night.

Ped said we could do it as long as we wanted. We finally broke him out at 5.5 months.

I think we weaned DS off of the swaddleme when he started rolling over - around 4 months..... we started by leaving one arm out, then two arms, etc.

Our ped also said we would know when it was time. He started to consistenly break out around 4.5 months...sometimes I feel his sleep just hasn't been the same...4 months later. Chat Icon
