How do you know when its thrush?
Aside from his normal reflux issues, I think DS might have thrush. I dont breastfeed, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. I dont notice any white patches in his mouth, but his tongue does have a slight white tinge to it. He's been having a lot of trouble eating. He's hungry, but when I give him the bottle he takes a few sips and then starts screaming and crying. Every time he sucks ont he nipple he cries. He's extremely fussy during feedings and even in between feedings, and he's been having gas hours after he eats (and after I get some good burps out of him). He'll wake up from a deep sleep screaming and crying very suddenly for no reason.
He sucks on his pacifier just fine, so I'm not positive that its actually thrush, but the bottle he just screams when he drinks from it.

That sounds like my DS. He is very gassy and the Dr told us to give him Mylicon and he also has reflux. He is now on water and Maalox.

sterilize the bottles and nipples - for us - that made the white stuff go away. i do it EVERY time now - since her tongue used to be VERY white and its not anymore!

Re: How do you know when its thrush?
Have you called the pediatrician? It's normal for formula fed babies to have a white tongue. And it's also normal for babies to have gas issues, which causes crying. I might also suggest looking into a larger nipple size on the bottle....the baby might not be getting enough formula if it's too small.

This is reflux to a Tee! Ask for a gastroenteroligist referral from your pediatrician Prevacid was the only thing that made feeding manageable for DS and usually peds. only prescribe Zantac. Good Luck!

thanks! I'm going to see the Ped at 12 today, so I'll ask about that. He's on Zantac now and it was working for the first week or so, but all of a sudden it seems to be worse! He never used to get gas hours after eating and it scares the cr@p out of me when he wakes up out of no where screaming in pain

Re: How do you know when its thrush?
My DD was diagnosed with thrush a couple of weeks ago. She had a very white tongue and was getting very fussy and gassy during eating. Doctor said that thrush can cause her to be fussy during eating because her mouth her and it also causes increased gas. We were put on a nystatin liquid for 14 days and saw no improvement. We went back last week and he gave us a prescription for diflucan but said he was doubting thrush now, maybe it is just milk on the tongue and to try to wipe/clean her tongue. I have been trying to clean her tongue but nothing is coming off. Also it's not very easy to fit into a newborns mouth to get to the middle/back of the tongue. So I am not sure if it is milk or thrush. It's not wiping off, but the medicine isn't working either.
Anyway we still continue to have difficulty with fussiness at eating and I am still trying to figure out if it is thrush or reflux related.
Could you let me know what you find out at your doctors appt. today? It sounds like we are having some similar issues! I had written a post earlier today almost identical to yours asking about reflux/food sensitivity.
