how do you know how big your baby is?
I keep reading these posts about people who know how big their baby is, and I'm a little confused.
I'm 32 weeks and my doctor has yet to mention anything about the baby's weight. I asked the nurse at my last appointment and she just told me the average for the point I'm at in the pregnancy.
Does everyone else's doc just tell them how big the baby is? If so, how do they figure it out?

I had to ask. Even when they said how gigantic he is, I still had to ask. But they have a better estimate because they are doing sonos on me. If you're not getting sonos, then they don't do measurements.

They estimate the weight based on certain measurements taken during sonos. I had one today actually & the baby was about 4 1/2 lbs at 32 wks

If your dr sends you for a growth sono they will tell u how big the baby is. unless u get a sono i dont think they can tell...

Doctors can tell the size of the baby by..either the fundus height (measuring small or large for dates)..feeling your tummy..and by growth sonograms..Overall all of this is just a estimate of the size of the baby...
The growth sonogram is the most accurate but really doesnt account for most of the fat the baby has on him/her. (the only measurement that takes that into account is the abdomen)
The baby I am carrying is measuring 3 weeks ahead of schedule...at 30weeks1day he was 4lbs3oz and my fundus height is 4 weeks ahead..those measurements along with the fact that I have big babies lets the doctors know about what size baby to expect.

Keep in mind that these estimates aren't an exact science. They told my sister to expect a 9 pound baby, and my nephew was 6 pounds.

Keep in mind that these estimates aren't an exact science. They told my sister to expect a 9 pound baby, and my nephew was 6 pounds.
Very very true!!!!!!!!! They told me 3 days before my daughter was born that she was 5lbs 5oz..she was born 3 days later..at exactly 36 weeks gestation..and weighed 8lbs!!!!
With that said..my twins were born the same day as a growth sonogram and they weighed almost exactly what the dr. said....

they never tell me either that is why i demanded a sono next appt to i have an idea and i know the baby is doing well. i will be 36 weeks at that point

My doctor routinely does a growth sono at 32 weeks.
They take a bunch of different measurements and it comes up with an approximate weight.

My doctor did a growth sono, but he was telling me the size based on his feeling my belly. He said "if you have the baby in the next few days, you're looking at 7.5 pounds." Baby came a few days later and was 7.7 pounds.

by fundus height my baby is measuring 2 weeks ahead (30 weeks). what this means i'm not sure since the doctor said that does not mean the baby is 30 weeks

Me neither...but that's because my doctor has told me numerous times that my pregnancy is very low risk, I am measuring perfectly (uterus growth), all tests have come back perfect, and my weight gain has been ideal...you have nothing to worry about...no news is good news. Certain people have high risk pregancies that need to be monitored on regular basis, thus they get to find out the weight and size of the baby.

That means the baby is measuring 2 weeks ahead in size..but a big baby doesnt mean a "mature" baby....the lungs would still be 28 weeks.
