How do you keep your sick toddler away from your newborn?

2yo DS has this cough that just won't go away. He's had it for weeks.

I try my best to shielf the NB from 2yo DS but once in a while DS will start coughing right around NB.

How do you keep your sick toddler away from your NB?

I'm afraid DS will make NB sick.

If anyone knows this answer I would love to know also. DS (3 years old) had strep 3 weeks ago and the stomach flu this week. He is finally back at daycare today.

Our DD is 4 mths old. The best I was able to do was distract him and have him do something else. I would also put DD in a swing or crib, where he could not get to her. DS only desire was to be able to hug his sister. We were able to reason a little bit with him - don't know how to do it with a 2 yo.

The only thing we had going is DD is on BM and not formula. The ped said my immunities are passing to her. So far we have had no issues with her. CROSSING MY FINGERS!!

We brought our newborn home on a Friday and Saturday morning my 3 yo woke up with croup. We were terrified of the baby getting sick. We literally kept them on different floors for a few days. It was so hard, but thankfully the baby didn't get sick.

When my younger DD was 3 weeks old, my then 14 mth old got a 105+ fever on and off for a few days. She wasn't coughing and sneezing, so I think that made things easier. I didn't keep them in the same room. I washed my hands and face and changed my shirt in between handling the kiddies and asked for help from others so that I didn't have to watch both at the same time. I never use lysol, but I did then. My newborn pretty much stayed wrapped up in her blanket and attached to me, so there wasn't much she was touching. I cleaned the sofa and ottoman constantly. (leather, so easy to clean/wipe down.) luckily, she didn't get sick.

I was so worried about this too. My DS was 2 when we had our new baby. He was sick a few times and the baby never got it. I was constantly washing my hands and trying to keep them apart.

I was lucky because the baby didn't get sick from his brother (and he was formula fed, too). In fact, he got his first cold at 8 months and got my 2 year old sick! It is much harder once the baby is mobile, crawling and they touch and play with the same toys. Before that, it is easier to keep them apart.

At least winter is coming to an end and there will be less sickness floating around too!

I'm learning it is not easy that is for sure! My 2 yo just got my 5 month old sick for 1st time. My 2 yo has had this cough for 3 wks now and finally the dr put him on antibiotics but my little one caught it, thankfully what he has is a lot milder but it's so hard. I try to wash my hands constantly and my 2 yo's hands a lot too and constantly disinfecting.

u really cant keep them away from each other--i would just wash my 2 yr olds hands more
