How do you do remodels/decorate
Do you decorate/remodel all at once for a "wow" effect or do you do things in dribs and drabs?

Re: How do you do remodels/decorate
Little by little...owning a house is SO much work, and very expensive. It is also an ever-changing thing.
When my sister moved into her house she rushed to reno and decorate, and then realized she didn't love her furniture or the changes she made because she rushed and didn't think about her decisions fully. Painting can easily be redone, but knocking down a wall and then rethinking it cannot easily be changed back!
Move in, buy the necessities, and take your time making any major decisions or purchases. You have 30 years!

Re: How do you do remodels/decorate
this is what we want to do..we're planning on using my bedroom furniture for now, they're leaving a dining room table, and then just buying 1 couch and a tv stand/coffee table
our first room will be the bedroom..im basically planning it all out now/saving up for it, so that we can redo it over the course of a few days from start to finish, so that it's a huge transformation
after that, it's going to be,
living room office kitchen/dining room bathroom upstairs demo
if i get one room a year i'd be thrilled

Re: How do you do remodels/decorate
it takes me forever to decorate. i am non-committal. i have to do a whole room at once or it will never get done.

little by little... I tend to search forever for that one "it" piece.. one at a time, that fits our tastes/decor... That's why I love traveling, you can always find unique things

Re: How do you do remodels/decorate
I think it all depends on what you have the time and money to do. Our house was kind of gross when we bought it, so we gutted the whole thing and DH and the help of his friends re-did the whole thing except for one of the bathrooms cause it was recently redone. It took 3 months total to do and was the best thing for us cause then we weren't living in a construction zone.
But I know that most people don't have that time to wait, so go little by little, one room at a time

Re: How do you do remodels/decorate
we bought a fixer-upper It needs a kitchen in a BAD way, it is all original with METAL Cabinets. We plan on redoing the kitchen and floors (that are a shag carpet) before we move in.
I will take a bunch of photos this weekend, I am sure they will make great before and after.

Re: How do you do remodels/decorate
I do it here and there. I rather buy pieces I LOVE than something I kind of like just so it's finished sooner. I have been in my house almost 3 years, and not one room is totally done yet, most rooms are renovated but decor hasn't been completed.

Re: How do you do remodels/decorate
When I first moved into my house, we did a lot of things that were relatively easy and inexpensive, but really dramatically changed the look of the house. These things included:
1. taking down wallpaper and paneling, and painting new colors;
2. removing carpeting and finishing hardwood floors, and changing carpeting;
3. Changing light fixtures;
4. Painting kitchen cabinets and changing hardware;
5. Getting new bathroom vanities.
Sometimes even the smallest things have a huge visual impact.
Furniture -- i tend to buy the main pieces needed all at once, but supplement with additional, less essential pieces, as well as accessories, over time. A lot of my walls are still blank -- I'd like to buy more artwork, for example.
I do "refresh" my rooms from time to time by doing things like changing the shower curtain, buying new pillows/throws, etc.
As far as major renovations - I want to renovate the kitchen, but I don't think it makes sense to do those big projects piece meal. So I am waiting until we can do it all (counters, appliances, cabinets) at once.

Re: How do you do remodels/decorate
major remodels were done prior to getting furniture (like installing laminate)
then painted...
All major rooms that are populated often and seen when you first walk into the house (kitchen, living room, dining room), were done.
Living room is completed. then the dining room. I'm still looking for a new kitchen table (have a crappy one now, but I'm so picky.)
then...........the usptairs rooms...
bathroom remodels and cabinets in kitchen and all that stuff will be done this year or next, as we have spent so much already.

Agreed! When we bough our house we demoed the main floor completely. There was paneling in every room, it felt veryclaustrophobic. Our renovations were done in 6 weeks doing it our selves with the help of our dads. Ime so happy we made the decision to do it when we did. Decorating and buying furniture is we plan on doing next. But like mentioned before it depends on time and money.
