How do you "discipline" your dog?

my dog is 2.5 yrs old. she's completely housebroken and has free roam of the whole house - and we've given away her cage.

she is sometimes mischievous in tearing up toilet paper, knocking over the bathroom garbage pail, chewing things she knows she shouldn't...

when she's been caught doing a bad thing, she does laps around the house - we call it the "bad girl dance"

i'm feeling like she is not getting any sort of discipline in that she just gets to run away. now i know you're not supposed to "punish" a dog, but how do you show them that there are consequences to their bad actions??

you can purchase a light leash that she can drag around the house. this way if you catch her with something she should not have, she catn run away. you can easily grab her, remove it and tell her no.

Also a good thing for the dog to learn is "leave it" you can look this up online and learn how to do it.

and just an fyi that you might already know, if you dont catch her in the act of doing something then it is useless to correct her on it. she wont connect the two. if the toilet paper is chewed up when you get home, yelling at her wont do any good. you have to catch her doing it and interrupt the behavior.

When Daisy does something wrong, we tap her on the nose and say "bad girl" or "naughty" in a stern voice. She puts her tail btw her legs and lays down on the floor. She stays like that while we calm down and deal with the issue, and then about 10 min later we rub her ear and hold her to let her know we won't stay mad at ehr.

we usually just say no in a stern voice. if that doesn't do the trick or it's something really bad we shake the can (an empty soda can with pennies in it)

ETA: Katie does sometimes steal tissue out of the bathroom garbage. Usually she brings them to another room and shreds them. Chat Icon I don't know why they like tissues so much.

We beat her

hahaahaa!! No seriously - we usually tell her NO very sternly. She knows enough now to know we need business.
Then within 10 minutes, we take her outside to run around for a while. Most times they do this is cause they have a little bit of energy the need to get rid of Chat Icon

I have what I call the "beater". It is a rolled up Yankee Trader. All I have to do is say, "I am getting the beater" and they scatter. If I, actually, get it and show it to them, they know they've done something very wrong. No, I don't hit them with this. I don't have to. I just have to show it.

Great advice, And to also add, if she is tearing up paper and then running around the house after, it sounds like maybe she needs a little more exercise during the course of the day.
