How do you choose a hallway color?
Our new house has a narrow hallway off of which the bedrooms are located. Im pretty sure that each bedroom will be a different color - Abby's room will be a delicate pink. Zippy's room will be something boyish - maybe beige-y. Our room will be neutral. Is there a "rule of thumb" when it comes to hallways? Or do ya just go with what you like? I doubt that we will be putting any artwork on the walls - MAYBE pictures but even that is a stretch. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Re: How do you choose a hallway color?
In the upstairs of my house all the rooms are different colors but the hallway is a warm vanilla color. I really like it It's a Benjamin Moore color, though I forgot the actual name.. vanilla something.....

Re: How do you choose a hallway color?
We have a light grey. Every room is completely different, but has a touch of grey in it. DS's room is blue, but with a bit of grey. DD's room is a dusty rose. The library is a light taupe. The living room is a dark taupe.

How do you choose a hallway color?
Same way we pick any paint color.
Usually alot of bickering in the paint store between DH and I. 7-10 color samples later, one of us concedes.
We have completely different taste when it comes to paint colors.

Re: How do you choose a hallway color?
I'm going to hope that DH will not have an opinion on colors and decorating and defers to me. Fat chance as he made me carry our china around Fortunoff to match it with flatware and stemware. He can pick the solar panels. I get to pick paint.

Re: How do you choose a hallway color?
I think we are going to use Nantucket Gray (BM). DH and I love this color for our entryway and main hallway and the first floor, but the wall continues up the stairs and around to the bedrooms. It does not match the colors we picked for the bedrooms, but it flows OK. Landon's will be blue and brown, babies will be yellow, guestroom green and our room Adobe Beige.

Re: How do you choose a hallway color?
For our hallway downstairs I went with a light sagy green color since its kinda narrow and I didnt want something too dark because I didnt want it to seem small. The sage green ties in with the kitchen since the hallway is right off the kitchen.
Our hallway upstairs is going to be small once its all said and done so I will probaby go with a beige color.

Re: How do you choose a hallway color?
I was unsure about this as well. I would probably pick a lighter tone that the living room since tht will be the closest open room to it.. but I am going to hold off on painting our LR I think because I have no furniture for there, and I want to wait.
I think I am just going to do BM Muslin in the hallway, because that is what I have here in my LR/Hallway and I really like the color.

Re: How do you choose a hallway color?
If it's narrow I would go with a light color.
Our downstairs hallway is the same color as the other walls b/c their was really no end to change colors. Our stairway and upstairs hallway is a nice warm yellow.

Re: How do you choose a hallway color?
Go neutral. We have an open Great Room when you walk into our Hi-Ranch, so the Entryway, LR, DR, Kitchen & Hallway are all BM Carlisle Cream. Nice light beige. The bedrooms are off of this hallway. Our BR is BM Brittany Blue, 2nd BR is BM Nantucket Breeze (light sage green), 3rd BR is BM Hay Stack (yellow) and the Bathroom is BM Weekend Getaway (medium sage green). Beige was the way to go for us. GL picking a color!

Re: How do you choose a hallway color?
We picked a nice neutral color that "went" with everything - it's a beige color with a slight greenish-grey tint.

Thanks all. I see everyone likes the Benjamin Moore paints. Is there anything wrong with the Valspar brand from Lowe's?

for whatever reason, BM paint is the end all, be all on this board.
I used both BM and behr (Home depot) and don't see the difference. except in price. and I don't need to have posh paint on my walls as long as it looks good.
as for the hall, if it gets decent light, you could do a nice grey. if not, I would do a nice yellow to brighten up the space and reflect the light.
house beautiful.com usually has great paint tips (as does the magazine. it dedicates a couple of pages to paint color in each issue).
congrats again and good luck!!!

Def. nothing wrong with Valspar brand. Good paint, and it's low VOC. And they have great color to choice from. Check out their signature collections to, I love them. We used Valspar "Swoosh" which is a light beige. It reminds me of sand. We love it. It's in my Family Room album if you want to see pics.

Re: How do you choose a hallway color?
go neurtal, and light. if the hallway is narrow you don;t want to close the space in anymore.
I use Valspar. I just have the BM paint wheel with every single paint color, so I just go by those colors. you can pick a BM color but have lowes make it, it any brand paint

I don't like or use BM paint, because they don't have zero VOC paint. They CLAIM they do, but when you actually look at the numbers, they do have VOCs, but the gov't lets them claim zero, even when it's not....

Not to drink from the Koolaid I have vaspar, behrs and bm in my house. They all look good, but I think BM holds up better over the years. It's also easier to paint with, if you are doing the painting yourself. It goes on thicker and coats better, more even.
I can tell the rooms that have BM and the ones that dont. I think the paint looks different. Just my experience.

i agree....we painted 2 apts with paint from HD and Lowes and we thought our walls looked great...when we bought our house we decided to go with BM paint (my Dad gets a discount, so for us it comes out to about the same price as HD or Lowes) and i did notice a difference. i even notice a difference in other people's houses - my grandparents don't use BM and some rooms my parents painted are not BM and i can tell the difference...some people say they don't see a difference but i see it...i'm just glad we don't pay full price for the paint otherwise i don't think we could afford it - we have a lot of walls!
other than Behrs, Valspar and BM I haven't tried any other paints - there could be something out there that I like even better than BM but so far it's my favorite...
as far as what color to paint your hallway - i would stick with something neutral and something that coordinates with the living areas of your house - (living-dining-kitchen)

Re: How do you choose a hallway color?
Leslie, my hubby is in construction and he HIGHLY recommends BM paints! The colors are richer and in most cases you only need one color for top coat! He said at the end of the day, you're really saving $$ and getting a good quality paint job. He said this AFTER we painted our entire apartment with Behr paint and had to apply two coats in order for the color to look "rich", and then helped painting my SIL's house with BM paint. From now on, we will only use BM paint.

Re: How do you choose a hallway color?
all our hallways are contected to other areas so we just kept the same color as the adjoining room. Otherwise id probably just choose something light as hallways tend to be dark.
