How do I get my 1 year old not to Bite!!
I don't know how to handle this. My 4 year old Ava never did this, but last night Mia my 1 year old bit my daughter Ava on her leg hard..She bruised it pretty bad. I felt so bad. I just told Mia loudly NO BITE , NO NO.. She laughed and rasberried at me. I almost busted out laughing because who knew a 1 year old could stick their tongue out at me. Boy they start young! She is a drama queen already.. haha.. Anyway for moms that have gone through the biting stage. What do I do to stop it or how do I properly get Mia to know its bad?

Re: How do I get my 1 year old not to Bite!!
My one DD does this. Her teacher said to say "NO" sternly and ignore her. At 1 you really cant do time outs. My DD is 20 mo and we started them although she really doesn't get it. she also laughs about it. The teacher said not to say "no bite" b/c the last thing they hear is "bite". She bites her twin ALL the time and I feel so bad. Many times her twin puts her fingers in her mouth so you would think she would know better by now, but nope.

We just say No. Its gotten better but sometimes she starts to lean in and I try to stop it before it progresses. She bit my shoulder about 2 months ago and I had a big black and blue bite mark for weeks.

How do I get my 1 year old not to Bite!!
DS did this to be this morning - I was so caught off guard I screamed OW! and pushed him away (not hard obviously LOL). He looked at me and started whimpering. I said no bite, now come give me a hug. And he came over and gave me a big hug. I think it's important to address the behavior and then show a positive behavior.

My DS was never much of a biter but he has done it to us here and there. I really like the book "Teeth are not for biting" and it seemed to help.

IGNORE ignore IGNORE. it was much worse when we reacted. we used to say "ouch that hurt mommy" and other yell and put her in time out... things like that, and it just made her do it more. Now I just say a firm but not yelling NO biting and ignore the behavior. It stops quick. She only tries occasionally when she is teething but she almost never does it anymore.

I disagree with this. At that age they don't know it hurts and don't necessarily know its wrong to do.
I would always give a stern NO and then redirect to another activity and that worked for us. Or would give her a teething toy that was ok to bite if her teeth hurt.

i agree with saying no..my ped told me to say no sternly and put her in a playpen for 1 min as a "time out". I know it sounds harsh but they need to know right from wrong.
