i took DS when he was 3 1/2, so it might be different but he was fine. he sat in the chair and did everything the dentist asked him to.

I took DS to the dentist for the first time when he was 2 1/2. He did great, although the dentist really didn't do anything. It was more to get him used to going there.

He sat on my lap while I sat in the dentist chair. I swung my legs off the side and sat knee to knee with the dentist. Then she had him lay back on my legs and into her legs. She had him open his mouth, counted his teeth, checked his overbite.

Then she had him sit in the chair by himself. She showed him how he should be brushing and put some sticky flouride paste on his teeth.

It doesn't seem like we need to take him RIGHT now. I think I will wait a few months after the new baby is born. We have enough things going on without having to rush 2yo DS to the dentist.

My DS is now 3 1/2 and he's been to the dentist 2 times. He is almost due for his next visit. So far, both visits have been like I described above. I just want to get him used to going so that when the dentist does eventually have to do more, he is more comfortable with the office, chair, dentist.

I'm sure he'll be fine! Chat Icon Chat Icon The only reason you may want to take him before the baby comes is that you are going to be very busy after the baby....I know how quickly time slips away after #2 comes! Chat Icon

I just took the boys at 4 and they did fine. My dentist didn't recommend bringing them in before that and I personally do not think it would have gone too well if I did. They were a little nervous in the beginning, but the staff was great with them and they did really well!

DD went to the dentist for the first time at 18 months and she was horrified by it all. She was fine though as soon as the dentist was out of her mouth.
I also feel it necessary to add that my DD is extremely shy/scared of new people, so that didn't help.

We recently took my DC to a pediatric dentist for the first time and they did pretty well. Pediatric dentists usually cater to kids so that makes the visit more pleasant.
