How did you move?
We are hiring a moving company and intending on putting all of our upstairs boxes in one room and all of our downstairs boxes in another room downstairs and sorting as we go.
We are intending on having the locks changed the day after closing when we get the keys and I am intending on going to clean that house top to bottom after closing the day before we move in...
any pointers or things you wish you thought of when you moved?
Also - what was your 'must have list' for cleaning when you went to the new house?
TIA

Re: How did you move?
I would bring rubber gloves, lysol, lots of paper towels, whatever cleaning products you use & a vacuum (even though you will have to vacuum after you move in). Oh & the magic eraser!

Re: How did you move?
We bought double the cleaning agents too - we figured we would need them both places and we would use all of them anyway.
If you have more bathrooms than you used to, make sure you get 2 plungers, two scrubbers, 2 toilet seats, etc.
Make sure you bring lots of garbage bags, and if they didn't leave you cans, outside garbage cans too.
We brought lots of water and snacks too because we spent so much time cleaning and painting that we didn't leave for meals much.
Sponges, mops, buckets, scrub brushes, vacuum, swiffer, dishwashing soap, hand soap, paper towels...
Good luck!

Re: How did you move?
clorox cleanup... get it at target, it's the cheapest there. it's a disinfectant so you will know that the original owners germs will be KILLED by this stuff.
do a load of laundry without anything in it on the HOT cycle and detergent just oto clean it out. or, you can put your rags in there from cleaning...
liquid gold wood cleaner. . . great for kitchen cabinets... use a white rag with this, nothing that has fibers that can come off (like paper towels)
good luck and have fun!! it's so rewarding!!

Re: How did you move?
Oh! one more thing. please label your boxes! by room! if you have movers moving your stuff, let them do the heavy work and carry all the boxes to the rooms you want the stuff in... KWIM?? why should you do it when you are paying for them.
label the doors that match the labels on your boxes so there is no confusion and everything will end up where you want it.
my BFF did this, and her move went really really smooth.

Not sure what your recycling system is like there, but if you need to tie up all the empty cardboard, make sure to buy some twine. You will end up with a TON of boxes after you unpack.
Also for your day of cleaning - bring a lamp or something if you don't have overhead lights in every room so you can see if it starts to get dark.

Re: How did you move?
Great advice! Thanks everyone - I am making myself a list to buy from this thread.
Also - we are closing on a Monday morning - we are getting our keys at closing and moving in the following day - I already have a friend helping me clean the house - do you think thats enough time to clean out the home (the homeowners are severly OCD neat freaks) - AND paint the master bedroom?
I really intended to have the bedroom painted before our furniture goes into the room... Just want to make sure that I am not going to 'over do' it.. KWIM?
Thanks again for all of the help

Re: How did you move?
start cleaning in that room, then move along, have your friend paint, while you are cleaning (if she / he will agree to that). you should be completely done with cleaning within hours...
hopefully your closing doesn't take tons of time! if it does, then yes, you are biting off more than you can chew. maybe you can enlist one more person to help, as a safety net....

Re: How did you move?
I wiped down the kitchen and the inside of all appliances (the fridge was disgusting!) with gloves and fantastic with bleach. Once I was done cleaning, DH vacuumed all the rooms!
Glass wipes would be handy to do windows/glass doors.
