How crazy does this sound?
Next month I am going to do a FET.
I have 8 embroys left. My Doctor ( Dr. Brenner) says that I can only transfer 3 no more.
I will be 38, on the 3rd of March.
I want him to defrost all eight and let them grow to day 5 and what ever is left , I will transfer. I want to do this because I do not want to waste more time, it it does not work.
Meaning he will transfer 3, and then wait and if it works, great- if not then I have to start another month. I don't think all eight will survive to day 5. Can this even been done? Letting the embroys grow to day 5, when they were frozen on day 3?
Please comment, as I am sure I left out possibilities.
TIA......

Re: How crazy does this sound?
I don't think I've heard of allowing them to grow for days after thawing, but I'm still new at this!
I do know though that my place charges a re-cryo fee... so if you do end up with more than 3 embryos on day 5, then you will have to pay again to have them re-frozen.
Also, I know that at my place.. if you are planning on transferring 3, they will thaw 3. If not all of them make it, they will thaw them one-by-one until you have your desired # for transfer (or are out of embryos) - this way you don't have to worry about the re-cryo fees.
Why not just thaw and transfer 3 on day 3 and see how it goes from there? Some people theorize that the embryos do better in their "natural environment" as opposed to outside of the body when growing.
These are all just my opinons based on my SMALL amount of knowledge - I'm still new at this! Mine were frozen on day 5 - so I don't have much experience with what you are talking about.. sorry!

Re: How crazy does this sound?
My RE told us they don't freeze until day 5/6 because they need to be hearty enough to survive the thaw. I guess there are different schools of thought on that.
I'd go for all 8 and re-freeze if you can. This way, they can pick the 3 that grow best.

Re: How crazy does this sound?
Two things:
As far as I know, embryos cannot be thawed and refrozen, so they probably don't want to take that chance.
According to Dr. K, they have shown an extremely poor success rate with women over 35 and 5 day transfers. He told me he didn't know why there was little to no success, but that they really don't do 5 day transfers on women over 35 anymore for that reason. I did get PG twice on 3dt....
